Default Pontiac Bonneville - Weird Start Issue

My boss has an issue he sent to me and thought maybe you guys might be able to help. My first impression is the crank sensor or possibly the resistor type key may be wore out (can that happen?).

My car has an intermittent starting problem. When the ignition is turned from “off” through “on” to “start” the car is dead, the starter does not crank, nothing happens. (I can sit at “on” prior to “start” and the radio works, the A/C fan works, all power windows and sunroof work) When the key is immediately cycled to “off” then back to “start” the car will start with no hesitation. The battery is new; the power cables to the starter are new.

Car specifics: 1999 Pontiac Bonneville, 3.8L V6 engine, 95k miles.

Could be a bad ignition switch.

Is the "security" light going off on the first rotation of the key? If not your VATS ignition key needs replaced. Or the VATS module is bad.

I have a 92 and it started doing a similar thing. Security light would stay lit. Only way to start car was to disconnect battery, reconnect and start. I got the extra key supplied when I purchased the car new and it has never done it again.

Tried the new key and experienced the same problem. He finally took it in and had the VATS disabled.
