Default rechroming remote mirror

Well, I finally got my remote mirror tore apart. (And for those that need to also do it, you do have to break the glass out to get to the little pinch clamps that hold the 3 cables to the mirror base (there goes the date coded mirror)). Anyway, took it in and they want $200!!! Now, it was in really nice shape to begin with, I could have almost gotten away with just polishing it, but I've spent so much on this damn thing already, I might as well splurge somemore. And I know everything is going up in costs, but wow, does that sound like a reasonable amount for one of those? He does do great work. Jeff

was not necessary to break glass, cables can be undone at door knob end.

$150- 200.00 sounds about right for a quality rechrome. And like Engineer stated you would not had to break your glass. Carefully spread the crimped ends and slip the cable out of the notches at the remote control lever end. I just did this last night.

I can't look at it from where I'm at now, but I thought I had looked at taking the cables off at the door end but thought that I couldn't have gotten the sleeve ??? off still and the base wouldn't come off over the sleeve either. Either that or I thought I'd fubar up the crimped ends and never be able to secure them then. Hmmm

I have another mirror that I haven't torn down yet. Maybe I'll try your suggestion and try that end on it (it does need a new mirror anyway though). Do you think it'd be worth it to have it rechromed/new mirror and try and sell it? Think I could get my $200+ that I'd have into it out of it?

6804gto, did it just take a thin bladed regular screwdriver? Cuz I did try to spread the fingers apart at the knob end and it appeared it was just going to gouge the fingers, not spread them apart, if that makes sense.

Fred, I know where the cables go in on the knob side, just didnt want to break off the fingers where the cables went through. Obvious from 2 different posts, it can be done. What kind of screwdriver was used to spread those?

He didnt say he broke the glass......

What ever you do DO NOT send it to PotMetal Restorations of FLa.

I sent them 2 remotes,an early 68 Firebird round,67 GTO.
Told them to use the best parts off either to make the Firebird one
the plated one.
Both had minor pimples but nothing major.
After 3 attempts at them plating and adding more and more I finally
asked for money back.
I couldnt even get the mirror glass it it was so gobbed up with copper.
Rather than fill the pimples they just kept dipping in the copper tank
to even it out.
All the details were gone and as mentioned the glass wouldnt fit.
I got my mirrors back and a nasty note with refund check.
ALL the plating was removed from my mirrors with a bench grinder!
needless to say it was ruined, not because of plating but because they chose
to be A holes and grind all of it off.
I saved the mirrors so everyone can see the job well done.
I take them to car shows and let everyone know what butts they are.
The owner is the most unprofessional businessman Ive had the displeasure
of dealing with.
I never got re embursement for the ruined parts and even filed a complaint with Hemmings(from whom I found this clown). Im now boycotting Hemmings as well as they were powerless to remedy, unlike what they state.
Fast forward a couple of years later of searching for a early 68 Firebird round remote mirror.
I found a suitable core and hand delivered to guys in Holly Hill Fla.
They did a nice job but it wasnt cheap($200)
So I paid $40 more than PotMetal Restortations of Fla but got a nice job.
Too bad it cost me another $100 for a good core.

Yes, just use a thin blade screwdriver to carefully spread them apart. When they are spread apart enough for the cable to slid thru use needle nose pliers to push the end part of cable forward and out of the groove . It helps if you push back on the spring loaded little handle also. Just take your time and you will be fine. Hope this helps

Cammer, yeah, I did break the glass out on the first one. The 2nd one I have I will try the other method eventhough I do need new glass in it. Oh well. I will not use the guy you mentioned. The guy I use locally does an outstanding job, just pricey. Fred and 6804Gto, thanks for the tips, I will try that on this 2nd mirror I got.

One thing to remember those cable are color coded. If you put them back on in the wrong place the mirror will work but upside down and backwards.

Yeah, I saw those colors and in fact, the mirror backing plate even has the letters for the colors stamped into it.

Default remote mirror

Once the cables are removed from the knob, how does the mirror glass come off the base? Thanks

not to hijack your post but everyone needs to know about
the jerks at PotMetal Restorations
heres pics of their handy work
other pics didnt detail all the grind marks in the casting.
you can see a large crescent shaped one next to the hole.

I have a full-up Rectangular Remote Mirror in fine fine fine Original shape for $125. I gots the Round Remote in use on the 68GTO.

Better living through hoarding office supplies: the 3 popular Highlighters colors will re-ink the Red//Yelow//Blue (or green I forget) onto the cable trio and toggle.
