Adding 65 stainless splitter tips
Does anybody have any info on the exact location
to mount splitter tips. I just purchased a pair for my 65 GTO convertible, and I want my shop to install them in the correct location. I have viewed several of the pics on this site but I am looking for some specs or info. Thanks for your input Bob aka(Displayman) 65 GTO Convertible 67 GTO Sport Coupe 38 Chevy Pickup Hot rod |

Here is an instruction sheet from the repro splitters. Bad picture but may help.

I just installed the factory splitters and used the reproduction splitter brackets. They are about $50 but mount the splitters in the correct location and include the instruction sheet posted above.

Has anyone tried cutting the tailpipes without removing them from the car?
A related question--My exhaust system is free of corrosion, but there has been leakage on both muffler to tailpipe seams from the day it was installed. Very small leak that "squeeks" when the engine is revved. If I remove the pipes, what kind of exhaust sealer have any of you had success with? I have already tried heavy duty muffler clamps, multiple clamps, air wrench torquing until the muffler clamps break, etc.

I cut my exhaust while on the car to install my splitters. I bought a tool from an auto parts store that is like a large pipe cutter but with four cut wheels. It only takes a 1/3 of a turn to cut it off. It worked great and only took about 3 minutes each to cut off.

Displayman can you post some pics of your final installation. I want to do the same to my 65, but have never seen a clean installation and one that didn't seem to position the splitters to low.
Thanks, Ken |

Adding 65 Stainless splitter tips
Ken,
I will try to take some pics today. We used a SAWASALL to cut about a foot off of each tail pipe. Then we swedged the remaining pipe. We tack welded the remaining pipe. We then positioned the tips on the tack welded pipe. Once we were happy with the positioning, we tacked welded the tips; double checking the appearance from the side and from behind, then we finished the welding around the spot welds. For show quality, I would have new pipe made from the mufflers back. Much cleaner than 2 welds in a short area. Hope this helps. Good luck, Bob ( Displayman) |

Adding 65 Stainless splitter tips
Here are some pics of the splitter tips that I welded on to my
existing tail pipes while they were on the car. The car is a 1965 GTO unrestored convertible. I hope these pics show up for those who are interested. Later, Bob (Displayman) 1965 GTO Convertible(unrestored) rebuilt 389 3 deuces 4 speed 1967 GTO SPort Coupe project 1938 Checy Pick up Hot Rod |

Thanks for the pics Bob...Looks like you did a great job of positioning them. That's the way they should look in my opinion. Good luck with your restoration.

Ken,
Thanks for the opinion on the splitters. You really start second guessing the positioning, before the final welds. Thanks for everbody's info. It really helped me alot.
