97 gran am timing chain tensioner?
put the tensioner back on, notice there alot of slack in the chain. Are you suppose to pump up(prime) the tensioner? I'm afraid it might jump time before the oil pressure builds up. or is that normal? 4 cyl dohc cam. Thanks, Randy

should be no slack, does not pump up. suggest getting a new one. cheap insurance.

97 had a 1st and 2nd design change.
Is yours a 1 piece tensioner and shoe? Or 2 seperate pieces? Havent seen a 1st design myself. But think it's spring loaded. May have to remove a pin to engage it. The 2nd design use's oil pressure against a small cylinder(plunger). I'll have to ask a tech if they pre-pump oil pressure.

Its 2 seperate pieces. it does use oil pressure. I was wondering if you do it like a cam lifters, hand pump it up? Thanks
