Default Wrong Quadrajet carb?

Well, i took everyone's advice and decided to replace my Holley that was pouring out fuel of the secondaries with a Rochester Quadrajet but I guess I screwed up. I bought one off Ebay from a guy who rebuilds them . He said it was 1977 Pontiac 800cfm Quadrajet carb and I emailed him to make sure that it would bolt right on to my 79 403 6.6 TA. He said it would be a perfect fit. Well, no way....I would need at least a 2" spacer but then I will have hood clearance issues.
so, my question is...Was there a difference between '77 and '79 style Quadrajets???

Thanks

Just about all of the quadrajet bodies have the same dimensions. You shouldn't need any kind of spacer to mount quadrajet on Olds. If you are running after market intake with straight bore or square bore carb mount, then you need to fix the Holley. Flooding Holleys are a simple fix.

The Olds 403 Q-jets have a different style throttle arm than the Pontiac ones.
As I recall, the carb sits quite low on the Olds intake.
I would suggest that you get the "correct carb" for a 79 403 T/A.
Perhaps your Ebay seller will exchange it for you?

California spec 77 & 78's also used the 403.
Airfilter housing & shaker are also SPECIFIC to 403 T/A.

Default Here is the one I got

Here is link to the one i got:

I admit that I know next to nothing when it comes to motors/carbs. The holley 650 sat on it no problem but the accelerator linkage hangs too low on this Quadrajet.

Let me know what you think

I just orderd an Edelbrock 1806 650cfm that hopefully will work.

Thanks for any advice

Default You are exactly right 2many/Ta's

I just spoke to the gentleman who sold me the carb and he pointd outexactly what you said about the olds intake and the way the carb sits on it differently than the Pontiac intake. He sggested cutting off the lower section of the arm that is interfering since it is not needed for the 403. He recalled someone else doing this also. I will see if my mechanic agrees because I would prefer to put it on instead of the Edelbrock I just ordered.

Thanks!!

Why don't you find a "correct" 79 T/A Olds 403 quadrajet "core" & send it along with your NEW "incorrect" Pontiac quadrajet BACK to the person that sold it to you & have him detail/build the 403 q-jet to YOUR specs.

I think they mis-represented the carb in the auction.

If you start hacking on the throttle arm, you'll likely run into MORE problems with trans kickdown cable, etc.

If you dont need the car to be original.......which I assume you dont otherwise it wouldnt have had a Holley on it..........then I would not hesitate to use the Pontiac Q-Jet and just cut off that part of the linkage thats hitting the intake.
