70 Gp Model J wiw?
i've been considering selling my 70. while the prospect of not having it anymore would be depressing, the proceeds would be going twords a good cause. doing some research, has left me even more confused as to what would be a fair price. also, what would you think would be a good venue for advertising?
when i bought it about 4 years ago, it was represented as an original mile car at 52K and change. the only documents for that was an IL title that had 50K on it. the milage exempt box was not checked off. looking at the wear items like the pedals and drivers seat, might be true. it is a CA car with a copy of the CA title. it is probably the most solid original car i've looked at to buy in the last 10 years. the primary reason i bought it. it shows some rust at the bottom inside of the pass door, on the strip of metal between the package tray and the rear window, spotty light surface rust on the trunk floor, and a few small spots on the top of the right side of the rear bumper. the body mounts at the rear and the rad support are beautiful. as is the rest of the under side of the car. it has been repainted it's original color (or at least close to it) and has an aftermarket top put on :^( the paint is overall nice. some chips and some fish eyes on the front of the car. shine is good, very presentable. it has been bumped in the RR lower quarter and drivers door as some filler work is noticeable if you look close. i believe all the pannels are original to the car. the fabric seats are in beautiful condition, but the rest of the interior has a flaw here and there. seam in the head liner comming apart, cracks in the drivers door pannel, console, and a very small one on the dash. the original a.m. radio is in place, but not functional. the a/c works, but doesn't blow cold. you can see too many bubbles in the sight glass indicating low freon. the blower motor switch does what it wants and will pop the fuse if put on hi. the drive train is all original with a 400 and 2.93 open rear. the carb has a "rebuilt" sticker on it, but it is the correct # for a 70 CA emmisions 400. the car drives down the road beautifully with no pulls or rattles. the engine is tired. the choke works great, but once it's warmed up and the choke is off, it feels like it has a light skip at idle in gear (not in park) and will bog on take off if given too much gas. i have made adjustments that have made it much better than what it was, but it won't go away. i was going to tune it up but, checking it out i did a dry compression test it showed: #1 62psi #3 100psi #5 140 #7 125 #2 165 #4 150 #6 150 #8 155. there is a good amout of blow by pushing oil into the air cleaner, but no blue somke out the exhaust. my diag is bad rings. it has an exhaust leak at the pass manifold, gasket i believe and the tail pipes have holes in them. most all the chrome and trim is nice. wow, all that seemed alot shorter in my head than what it looks like written. if you've made it through all that, thank you and i would appriciate any and all imput you might have. thanks, matt |

69gp400:
i always put a premium on a car with little rust and original body pannels, because i can't do body work and to pay for it to be done right is quite expensive, as i'm sure you know. i don't have an asking price right now. mike nixon: thank you. that's my situation too, along with very limited space, and an even smaller budget. david400: thank you for your input. i like the way you think ;^) i've been watching ebay myself and considering posting it for sale there. i'm sure you've noticed also that, one week something will go for big bucks then the next week virtually the same thing doesn't do anything. might be the way to go for exposure though. |

I'm thinking 10k might be on the high side given today's market. Figure in the cost of an overhaul to the engine, paint/body work as necessary, and detail to the interior and any other minor work and you have a $20000 car. At any rate, sorry you have to sell it; they sure are a unique Pontiac. Good Luck! Ben.

matt i said the same thing when i bought my 69 gp. but i asked a lot of questions, bought a lot of tools and did it myself.when i brought it to a couple of shops for paint and the lowest price was 7000.00. i went to home depot bought a 60 gal compressor and a nice gun from eastwood and sprayed base coat clear coat and i surprised myself. i have never painted before and i am now on my third project.if you really like the car keep it and do the work your self.i would say my paint is a 9 out of 10.good luck and by the way i am about 75 miles away from you.

bought my 71 GP for $6500. had less mileage but needed about the same amount of work. when the vinyl was replaced was when the rust was found. if you did not do the vinyl work, look out.

thanks again for everyone's input.
the car, as pictured, is how i bought it. while i like the factory vinyl, the aftermarket one on the car just doesn't look right to me. |
