You might try to post this in the tech section or even PM Cliff, Ruggles he is the grand wizard of Carbs here.

Q Jets are THE MOST Touchy Carbs to do anything with, you may need to have it rebuilt. Contact our Host Performance Years, I remember years ago I had my 67 Firebirds Carb rebuilt by them. Can't remember the guys name, but he used to build these Carbs and Chris Cassperson knows who I mean.
Good Luck I still have Q Jets on my cars.

At least it's off the engine.
That way when you drop 1 of those screws it won't disappear down the intake. Take your time and maybe take some before pics if necessary.

BEFORE YOU START-I strongly suggest you go to your local book retailer and pick up Cliff Ruggles' book. The info it contains is priceless. There are many photos and tips that everyone can use. From the newb to the pro. A quadrajet rebuild is a meticulous, tedious job but it can be done. Be patient. The trickiest parts for a novice are removing the pin from the accelerator pump arm, and putting the carb top back on without bending the metering rods. Good luck. And buy that book first!

Ditto in the above. I just got done rebuilding mine. It's not that hard,if you have the skills you say. Buy Cliffs book for $20,then call him.He will set you up with the right kit for you year carb.Cliff is also a great help if you need it. I had a few questions along the way,and he answers his E-mails right away,or calls, when he's open.

If the car idles OK, the leaking seals and gaskets are not likely to be bad enough to cause a major bog when you floor it. A likely candidate is the accelerator pump if the car just falls on its face when you floor it, and then eventually picks up. Parts for this come in a rebuild kit. You can take the top of the carb with the carb on the engine and get to this. But you need to get a hold of some detailed instructions like Cliff's book.

If it only stalls when you stand on it, say kick the four barrel open.
The secondary air flap/valve is opening too fast or hanging open. There is a spring to set tension on the flap, and the choke pull off controls how fast it opens. These parts do not come with a kit, and can be repaired with the carb on the car. Check the pull off that has a rod going to the secondary air flap. You might have an easy fix. The vacuum hose to that pull off would also be a suspect. |
