aftermarket motor mounts and crossmember
My '73 Ventura originally had a Chevy 6 with a powerglide. I bought the aftermarket 1st gen Firebird frame-side motor mounts and th400 crossmember. I am using MityMounts on the engine. The same block, mounts and trans came out of my '69 Firebird.
2 problems...first it appears that one of the crossmember holes was not drilled in the frame. Is this common? Second, the motor mounts don't seem to line up properly...the engine is offset and crooked when the motor mount holes line up. Anyone heard of any issues with the aftermarket 1st gen f-body frame side mounts? We are swapping the mounts from my bird over tonight. Thanks!

Shelly-
YES the engine is offset, I think to clear steering box. I used a 67-9 Chevy camaro crossmember, fit perfect. I used original OEM firebird mounts, I left everything loose once the motor/headers were in place I tightened it all down. If you have time to do it now, do yourself a favor and put in a front All Pontiac engine plate. I will do that over winter. |

The engine drops right in with my old frame mounts from my '69 bird. I guess the after-market brackets are crap.
Also, the aftermarket th400 crossmember trans mount is off. The old crossmember from my bird works fine. We wasted hours on this....damn!

Only thing I had to do when I installed a T400 in mine was I bought an OEM crossmember from PY and had to drill the 2 holes in the frame that were not there on my car but were obviously in the crossmember. Everything else lined up fine, never had any problems.

Rob, the key word is OEM. Mine is one of the aftermarket pieces...POS! Comparing the original from my bird to the aftermarket piece, it is obvious what poor quality the aftermarket is.
We did have to drill the 2 frame holes...was obvious after looking at my bird's subframe. The trans was not close to the crossmember mounting holes when we lined it up. Using my old trans crossmember, everything fits perfect...same as the engnine mounts.

Shelly, you get everything done on your car? How's the dash coming? I wanted to see progress pictures to see how yours turned out.
