Default Cooland problems

I finally got a belt that fit so I can just run the water pump. I also just got my rear carb fixed so it runs 10 times better now.

So, I filled up the radiator and started her up. Sounds good, runs good for about 2-3 minutes and then starts smoking between the heads and headers. My mechanical gauge only says 190 degrees so it can't be over heating???

So i topped off the radiator again and notice it has a small leak at the bottom of the radiator (bummer) and about this time I see coolant POURING out of the intake down the block. I was tired so that's where I gave up. Here is a picture where the coolant is pouring out of.

What is the smoke? It's not black, it doesn't look or smell like burned oil. My only guess is that it's burning off the tape residue from where the heads were taped off paint didn't get into the port when painted the heads but it doesn't seem like it would make that much smoke.

What do yall think about the intake leak? Wrong gasket? My builder put the intake on but I assume he knows what he's doing. This is an Offy intake #5029 for 55-60 Pontiacs so it should work fine.

wrong gasket and no sealer. suggest you also replace those rubber gas hoses up to the carbs. just asking for a fire. looks like top radiator hose is collapsed.

That's what I was thinking. What a pain in the ass.

The fuel lines are temporary while I break in the motor and the hose is just a crazy ass bend not collapsed. I ordered the correct hose from Ames and the one they sent me does not fit. I don't have any luck with parts. Nothing I order ever fits.

Ok, I found the problem. the problem is this intake is made to fit either the early style heads or the 61-64 style. How do I plug the front coolant passage so the coolant does not flow through the holes for the 61-64 style.

The part number is 5029 which should be only 55-60. What is goin on with my intake? Were the front holes drilled to fit a 61-64 intake? Pics coming soon

Default get an intake that fits

I'd suggest finding parts that fit together properly.

The part number is correct for 55-60 Pontiacs. It should fit. Thanks for your insight though

Now I'm really confused. Look at this picture from ebay. Same part number 5029

Look at mine

They're different. See what I mean, How come I can't ever get the right damn parts???

Here are the pics from my phone

This is a 61-64 Gasket, I stopped at 4 auto parts stores today and could not find a 59 gasket but I had this laying around for reference

This is the 61-64 style gasket on my 59 head.

had that hole been round, you could have used a freeze plug forced in there with a sealer \ epoxy. but your pic looks like the hole is not round, so you could put a flat SS shim and sealer and hope it seals or make a temporary plug inside the manifold and use block sealer \ molten metal to plug that hole. just like is done for the center exhaust crossover on later engines

What if I drill it out to make it round? I think that's my best choice besides buyin a new intake.

Why the hell does it have the right number but it's not the right intake???

I'm doing this dance right now with a '59 Hilborn setup and a set of '63 heads and a set of '70 heads. The 55-60 intake gaskets and 61-64 gaskets have the same bolt pattern (6 bolts) but have different water passages, as you are discovering. 65 and up intakes have 5 bolts and don't match the older stuff at all. However, the actual ports on all 3 styles are identical in size and spacing. So theoretically if you can get them bolted up and not leak water, you can run anything on anything. You have a 61-64 manifold that was probably made recently to "old specs" and mislabeled. Can you get someone to weld it up? The Hilborn manifolds are just a flat plate with intake ports, so I guess if you keep the water in the head, you're good.

I can weld but not aluminum. I figure it would cost just as much to buy a new one as it would to get someone to weld up those front holes. Where should I take it to get it welded? Who can weld aluminum like that?

Thanks for your help, this is really frustrating.

I don't think I want to JB Weld it but I guess that would work. Will it work well enough? Will it grip and seal on aluminum?

If it was a Chevy I would just bondo it...
