Default Keith Black Forged pistons

I see these on pacific performance's website for a very reasonable price...I know that TRW's are around the same from summit, and I've heard that they are heavy. Are the KB's any good? I've heard good things about their hypers, but not much on their forged. I'm seriously considering them. Thanks

Their forgings are excellent. We just aquired a set for a 455 project. KB really did their homework on the new forgings, light years ahead of their HT offerings.....Cliff

Default KB forged

So with the new forged KBs, is the ring land issue non-existent as was with the HTs?

Cliff/Dude, in your opinions, what design characteristics do the forged KBs have that are different from the TRW design.....and any benefits possible?

Right to start with, they have grooves for spiral locks, short skirts, nice light pins, and moved the ring lands down just a bit. The pin height is low, so not a lot of material needs to be removed from the block for zero decking. Quite a bit of "meat" in the tops as well, right on for size/balance, etc.....Cliff

Thanks for the great replies guys. In your opinions, would they be good for a boosted application too? I'm going to build the short block stout now as much as my current money supply can allow, so that later when I go the 871 route, I won't have to do much to it. So far I like what I hear..What does he mean though, about the ring land area issue in the HT's?

They are a great design. Light, nice quality material, and a great price. We have dynoed a few with them with great results. For the price they are a great piston. We always have them in stock. If we don't have them in stock it means KB is out of them! LOL!!

Be Cool,
Ace

Ken, what's the pin height on the 455 stock rod length piston? Do they come with pins? Weights? Do you have any 455+.060 flat tops in stock? Thanks -Jim

Can you offer a engine kit with these pistons that is competetive with the federal mogul engine kit? I.E. Pistons Rod bearings Main bearings oil pump gaskets 650.00 I suspect there would be great interest.

MetalHead, the KB hypers have a tendency to break off a piece of the top ring land at the first sign of any detonation, the ring gaps have to be set huge to stop the ends butting too. All the broken sets I've seen have had this almost identical damage. I wouldn't use another set if they were free.

Taff thanks for the explanation. That does not sound like a good design...

I got a set of the Probe SRS forged pistons from Ace for my rebuild. They are almost too pretty to put in the engine, NOT. Only a little more than the KB's.

Between the SRS pistons and the ultralite rods the machinist had to take a lot of metal off the crank to balance it. Should make it rev easier.

These are something else, new KB forged, not hypertectics. -Jim
