The good aspects of the SD were made into a block that would accept the sprint car heads of the time. The basic configuration has stayed the same since with more and more NASCAR influence in the package. Other manufactures have got in the game. Current Midget engine with a W9 head.

More info...
Hot rod magazine article from Oct 87 detailing the DOHC head offering.
Hopefully I got the scans legible Also article from HPP. Pontiac used a detuned version of the SD4 16V engine combo in the Stinger Concept Car.

The SD4 was a very popular race engine. Pontiac in conjunction with Hod Rod Magazine had a magazine called "Pontiac Performance Plus" which detailed building SD4 engines as well as the Fiero IMSA race cars. The SD4 was also used in the 1984 Indy Pace car that actually paced the race.
When GM stopped making the SD4, a company called Kansas Racing Products bought the licensing from GM to continue to make the SD4. It is still used in the ARCA racing series. http://www.kansasracingproducts.com/Block_Features.html

For those interested, a shot of the "primary" and "secondary" roller cam bearings.

Welcome to PY Indy! By way of introduction to the other members, Indy is doing a Turbocharged Superduty build ( thread over at Pennock's ) and has one of these rare Cosworth heads he's incorporating into it. Lot's of interesting custom design and fab work.
Sorry for the late welcome, I've been kinda busy last couple of weeks. Was out at the track last weekend and down in Galveston for the APA show weekend before. I mocked up the SD and hauled it down there in the parts chaser for the Pontiac guys to look at. Even picked up a trophy for the ole truck.

I have seen Petersen's tech make other similar assumptions and be wrong there too.

Brings back memories. I had a NOS 4cyl SD cylinder head as well, all valves, everything and offered it for sale here on the forum years ago. I took it to Norwalk and a guy from an hour away from our home ended up buying it. A quick search should bring up the moth balled thread. I ended up delivering it to a guy in Sanford, Michigan. He had a 50+ Fiero collection and needed this SD head to complete his Indy 500 Pace car.

I sold my Cosworth Kit and all my SD4 parts years ago.. Recently had a discussion on Facebook Oddball Pontiacs thread about this. Parts are still out there somewhere.

I realize that this is a recently bumped thirteen year old thread, but that was so cool!!
I don't think I saw this discussion before. I have magazine articles with a 1989(?) Grand Am based GTO concept car; Mind you, back then the Grand Am was a cool car - about the size of a Sunbird, but much sportier. I would have loved to find a nice 1989-1991 Grand Am with a five spped and the iron duke to swap SD-4 parts on to - but post 1988 2.5/5 speed Grand Am's alone were rare (even twenty years ago), so I ended up essentially buying, and fiddling with the production version of that GTO concept car; A Quad4/5 speed Grand Am. Interestingly, the last incarnation of the 442 was a 1990-1991 Quad4HO powered Calais - the Oldsmobile version of the Grand Am; The production 1990-1991 442 was done absolutely like the 1989 GTO prototype. 1990 Calais 442 (full proper name: Cutlass Calais Quad442) (please note, those are non-production wheels, the 1990 442 came with five spoke 14" wheels) 1990 Grand Am SE The interiors were also light years apart. All of this aside, a DOHC Super Dtuy "Iron Duke" is still something I'd love to do one day - but with the absurd rarity of the SD-4 parts, I'm pretty sure it will never happen.

When the dam broke in Sanford MI. a few years ago, the area where that Fiero collector lived was flooded. I remember reading about the losses. It was a shame. I am not sure all that was lost but it was a lot.
