Looking at making a car trade, picking up a '69 Bird.
Firebird had a TH-400. Car is being swapped over to an early Muncie. Anyone specifically know the relative lengths of driveshafts between the different tranny options on a '69 Firebird? Trying to figure out if I can use the current driveshaft, or if I need to have it cut down, or need a new one? Thanks! Chris

According to the 69 Pontiac shop manual(page 4C-4) the 4 speed drive shaft is 49.96 inches long. TH400 is 49.30 long. hope this helps

One other thing to be concerned with....
The TH400 has different splines than the early Muncies, so the yoke is different. The one you'll need is more common as it fit the 3 and 4 speed stick cars as well as the 2 speed auto and TH350. I actually have a spare one from a '69 'Bird originally equipped with a Dearborn 3 speed if you need it. Bill

Thanks for the heads up.... I am aware (IIRC) that pre-71 Muncies used a 27 spline yoke, while the TH400 uses a 32 spline unit.

The car in question actually has a later 8.5" rear end (a 2.73 posi, presume from an X-body, not the original 8.2")... anyone know if this would this change the appropriate driveshaft length, and by how much?

I am doing the same swap, and the research I have done all indicates that the driveshaft needs to be 48 1/2" long, which I also understand is the length of the driveshaft in most of the 2nd gen 'Birds and probably Camaros.

I had a 8.2 to 12 bolt swap and used the big U joint you can get crossover u joints from lakewood and also spicer at napa.
The lakewoods are solid and non greasable but are strong as hell Thats what I run in my race car at 878 HP and a stock 69 bird drive shaft. NO issues in many many years. I thought mine was 50 inches from u joint center to u joint center but Id have to check to be sure. Been a while since I messed with it. Good luck with he swap.
