Default 1999 Dodge Ram Heater Core Change

Has anyone hear changed a heater core on a 1999 Dodge Ram? Ive been noticing an antifreeze odor after start up but no noticable leaks anywhere except for the smell. I haven't exactly pinpointed the smell, it does seem like it may be from under the truck sometimes. I looked at all the hoses but couldn't see any leaks. I did some research and the heater core change looks like a big Pain in the A$$.

little off topic but still Dodge.
my 99 van idler pulley was making noise.
took it off and went to the local starter/alternator rebuilder.
he pressed in a new bearing.
cost $4.00...$35.00 at the parts store.

Check for leaks or seepage around thermostat housing (crusty looking) or sometimes the front intake bolts break and coolant seeps out(hard to see). HVAC has to come out for heater core/ac evaporator. Also check your seal at the cowl to hood if it fell off you could be drawing engine compartment fumes into your heater box.

I agree with checking around thermostat area and heater hoses. check for play in the water pump shaft and leakage from the weep hole on the bottom of the pump, check freeze plugs on the side of the block, they will rust from the inside especially if coolant has not been serviced regularly. if you do not find anything around the engine area then remove the AC drain tube from the right side of firewall to check for coolant leaking from HVAC. If you determine it is the heater core, it is not a hard job but is time consuming.
