Voltage Regulators VR104 vs VR140
Can someone please advise the difference between voltage regulators VR104 and VR140? I have been told that since both have 3 terminals, they are both suitable replacements for Part #1119511 in my 64 Bonneville (389). I have a Standard brand VR104 currently on the car, and it has performed great, however I have been told that VR140 will also be a suitable replacement. With differentnt numbers, I assume there has to be some kind of a difference. I appreciate your input.
Thanks. Vince |

I'm not familiar with the numbers given, but if the vr140 has 3 spades , see if you can take the cover off. If it has only one coil winding then it will probably work. Why don't you just use a 104 since it has worked for you already? As far as I know the pontiac is the only CAR to use the 3 prong reg. I think 3 prong regs were used on some industrial farm and marine applications as well. Usually the farm and industrial alts were of lower amp output. Some were 22 amps, so it may not be heavy enough for your application if it is for the lower amp alt. You should be able to buy a replacement reg at a local autoparts store if you give them the OE number. If you need one I still have a couple for your application. Mark

Mark,
Thanks for your reply. NAPA shows the replacement to be a VR140, yet when I purchaed my Standard brand regulator last year, the salesman at the auto parts store (not NAPA) said the VR104 is correct. Who knows...maybe both would be suitable. Fortunately, I am not having any regulator problems, it's just a curiosity that I have to find out the differnece in the two. Thanks, again. Vince |

Vince - if you need a regulator; get one from Mark. I did and it works PERFECTLY !!
I don't know how many times I have tried to buy one at a parts store only to be frustrated. Not a bad idea to have a good one on the shelf. Jim
