68 GTO sway bars
My 68 GTO doesn't have any sway bars on it. It seems to me that a gto wouldn't be made without them. Did they actually build them without? I guess so since mine doesn't have any but it seems odd for handling purposes. Bruce

They made a whole lot of them without them. In fact...ALL of 'em.
As I recall, it was '71 before the GTOs came with rear sway bars. We are talking about the rear bar aren't we?

All Cars since the late 50's had front sway bars of some sort.
The GTO didn't get a rear bar until 1970. If the front bar's gone someone removed it, probably to help traction. Mike

I read somewhere that DeLorean was against installing rear sway bars on the GTO and they didn't get them until '70 when DeLorean had been promoted the Chevy. Does anyone know why he would be against rear sway bars???
I know that the rear bar and boxed lower trailing arms made a world of difference on my '69. The thicker front bar helped quite a bit too.

Just search for old Herb Adams vs. Dick Gulistrand articles. Gulistrand preached high spring rates while Adams preached large sway bars (horizontal spring). I have been more a follower of Adams' approach. Remember, it's a system. Dialing in the dampening/rebound of the shock with proper spring rate and sway bar size is Key. Look at roll center, camber, etc.
Adams' rear bar set up was 1 3/8 inches along with an equal front bar. Some say it induced oversteer more easily. For most of us, the handling gains would be fantasic.

only front sway bars. my 70 that i purchased new had the rear sway.
if you are putting rear sway on 68, you'll need to add boxed swing arms. |
