Default radiator overflow

did 68's come with overflow tanks? if so where were they mounted. Were they the same tank as 69?

Hi,
I agree with cuz68. The 68 did not come with a coolant recovery tank. There is a drain to the ground that comes out of a tube in the filler neck of the radiator. The black tank on the passenger side is for the windowwasher solution.

In my 68 Firebird there are provisions to install a later Nova style bottle inside the front of the fender. Bolt hole was even in the fender for the bottle and the spout comes out beside the battery. No more antifreeze on the floor

no overflow bottles through at least 71. There was a dealer installed generic GM optional one I believe though. I've got an old black antifreeze bottle wedged in there for now though since i'm tired of filling it. Keep in mind that the operating range of the rad is about 3 to 4 inches lower than the fill neck without a bottle.

I was going to ask about the fill of the radiator when there is no overflow tank. On my '71, it looks to sit about 4, maybe 5 inches below the neck when cold. If I fill it any higher, it will spew out a lot of fluid when the car is shut down, even after just a short drive. Are there any markings on the rad that will indicate the correct fluid level? Or is it just trial and error?

Hi,
I think that there is a fill level marked on my 68 radiator at about the point shown in the accompaning pic.

My 69 doesn't have an overflow tank. When I take it to the strip the tech guys give me heck so I just put the overflow tube to the winshield fluid bottle which is on the passenger side and they OK that. I haven't used windshield fluid in 30 some years cause I don't drive when its that messy out!

anyone have any pics as to where they put there overflow tank. might have to fab up a bracket to install it. not sure where the tank was located in the 69 that it came out of. should have taken notice before I removed it.
