Default What is this called???

Hey Fellow Pontiacers....

What is the official name of this thing in the picture that has the green cover? I have also seen them with black covers. What is it used for? And better yet, does anyone have one???

Thanks in advance!!

I think it is a solenoid that restricts vacume advance. I'm not really sure the application, I'm at home with NO reference material. If no one else chimes in here, I'll let you know tomorrow.

Yup...looks like part of the dual vacuum advance system found on some 68/69 GTOs...Along with the TVS that is at front of Intake manifold. It was used to advance timing when temps got up and retard it when temp went back to normal (to somehow reduce emissions)..Didn't last too long, and I have seen parts of the system sold on ebay, so not that easy to find.

Here's one for sale right now:

I believe it is called a vacuum advance valve. I have seen some of the vendors that carried it at one time in black so you should be able to find one. I have seen statements that some of the early 69's used it, but it did not last long. I am unsure of its application in 68, sorry.

I would find them on alot of Oldsmobiles. I would get them out of the salvage yard clean and test them and sell on ebay. Used to get about $75 for them. That was before Ebay changed.

Yes, they are part of the dual advance/retard system on 68 GTOs with manual transmissions. I have them on all of my cars.

I have not seen them on all 68 m/t cars. Wasn't sure it was an across the board thing. Good to know.

I've attached the vacuum hose diagram and a pic.

Vacuum Advance Control Valve. Used on M.T. 400's in '68/'69.

All the same EXCEPT... Ram Air II which had a separate pt.no. (green cap, diff. spring).

See...

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=613337

I don't believe the RAII version is being reproduced.

Speaking of this part, I see that PY offers the BLACK CAP only on EBAY for $10
but shipping is $14.99. Is this the only way to get the cap from host.. on EBAY?
Shipping for such a small, light part should be less than $5.

So I assume it just needs to hold vacuum up to a certain point?

I have a MT and originally manual brakes, so I hope it isn't different now that I am switching to power discs. Thanks for posting that diagram runningbwdog.

Manual vs power brake shouldn't matter.

I just looked at mine and the black cap is missing. Does anybody have an old junk one with a good cap?

Sorting through years of parts...

Question: On the Distributor Vacuum Control Valve, how many ports (nipples) are there and where do they connect to?

One on front, One on RH side, One on LH side?

I believe I've seen variations... some have only the (1) on front & (1) on RH side while others have (3) vacuum tubes. Since these were only used on M.T. vehicles ('68/'69), I wouldn't think there would be a difference (other than the GREEN type used only on RAII cars).

Anyone have photos of original units?
Is the one being sold by PY a repro or NOS/GM?

I see they have the BLACK caps (RE) for $10ea but shipping is $15... odd.

Thanks!
