Default Ideas to get a trunk Open??

Trying to get the trunk open on a '73. The lock cylinder is still in it but the center has been knocked out. I've never had to do this before so any ideas on how to get it open would be greatly appreciated. The drivers side taillights are not mounted so I have a way into the trunk from that side. I played around with a screwdriver but that didn't work.

If the lock is totally ruined anyway, you could drill straight through it. There is a steel shaft that goes into a slot after that. You can remove the shaft then use a long screw driver to turn the slot and pop the trunk open. This is the way of the junkyarder. I've never tried F&S73T/A's way, so you may want to try that first.

OK,that was a stupid comment after I went outside to look, but base that on this Mexican Matador I'm drinking right now,6-7 inch flathead from outside of cylinder should work....

Look inside where lock cyl. was & if you can see a slot, try turning it with a medium sized slot screwdriver.

Also look for a thin flat rod. You may be able to turn it with needle nose pliers.

If you remove rear seat backrest cushion, the latch bolts can be accessed.

You need to put ALL of your extensions together for this one.

Once it's open, then lock cylinder bolts can be removed from the inside.

If you have to use more than one extension, make sure you tape them together just to make sure they don't come apart...

I've used all the mentioned ways and they all work. Probably the safest way to not damage the car is the removal of the seat back rest and go in with a super long extension and remove the latch off the decklid. Once inside you can go in and remove the retainer off the cylinder and replace it with a new assembly. You should be able to get the latch back on the decklid in the right place just by looking at the paint lines and the bolts in their proper location based on where the washers left marks on the decklid.

Try this, you say the drivers side light is out, if you reach in from the light opening until you can feel the hole in the lock center, stretch one inch further and you will feel a small square tab, press this down and it releases the latch. I just went out and tried it, however, there is no lock in mine at present, so it MAY be different but worth a try, its a good stretch !! Regards Bruce.

Cool!! Will def give that a try. You guys have given me several good ideas to go by. Car is in storage, should be able to get out to it in the next day or two and will let you know how it goes.

Take a flat head and duck tape it to the end of a broom stick and remove the back seat and go that way, works for me everytime, HAHA I had to do this at the TA nats years ago when I locked my keys in the trunk, Don't ask why or how I did that.

Yep, I've used this method myself on a '72 GTO, works well...
