it is too late for me to head out to the shop. I will look tomorrow and verify I do infact have an extra bracket. Pretty sure I do. Most I have seen were black painted. I have seen a couple that in the protected areas you could see gold cad plating left over. guess different suppliers?? anyway, painting black seems to be the accepted color.. i will chekc tomorroe and let you know...

At some point in time, it is quite conceivable the early stock was used up & the newer design was phased in to production. There would have been no reason for Pontiac to match quarters, side for side, when the difference is so insignificant. It would also stand to reason, that there were many more late cars done this same way.
How late in July was this one built?

Another 70 only feature: No Firebird emblem on the door panel where the manual window handle would have otherwise been. Don't know if there are cars with later build dates than mine (04B) that also have these door panels, but I would like to know if there are cars with earlier build dates that do have the emblem. Could have just been an anomaly and not early 70 Firebird specific.

Ok My car was built in 06D and the pass quarter is the old style with square early quarter and the drivers side has triangular. Both are original quarters to the car. I have nver notice this in all the years I have had this car, I bought it back 87' from a guy who bought it new I think.

Yes, that is the correct shape that all but a few late built '70 Firebirds had.

Difference between 70 and 72 trunk lock bracket. Lock mechanism is different too. Does 71 look like 70 or 72? Of course repops are of later design.

They're just coming out of the woodwork now.

I believe the inner door handles are different between 1970 and 1971-74. In this thread in post #6 I show some from a couple of different cars.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=698425

Look close at the chrome ones and you will see that one has a smooth inside (1970) while the other has two square holes in that location (1971-74). The back sides of the plastic inserts also have either a smooth surface or two square pegs that fit into those holes. The 1971-74 plastic would not work with the 1970 handles. Where the 1970 uses the tabs on the four corners only, the 1971-74 uses only two tabs along with the two pegs, so even if you ground down the pegs the inserts would not have 4 tabs to hold them in. The 1970 plastics would work with the later handles. The 1971-74 variation has a REV 2 molded into all the parts. Here's some numbers for the plastic inserts. I don't have those door handles in front of me, but I can gather numbers from thoes as well.

(1970 only)
8801932 10.515 Fir.,62,76............. ESCUTCHEON front & rear cont. handle-cust trl RH 1970 1970 10-8
8801933 10.515 Fir.,62,76.............. ESCUTCHEON front & rear cont. nandle-cust' tr LH 1970 1970 10-8

(1970(superceded) and 1971-1974)

Wow, this is just great, My son and I own '70 formula's I have 2 '70 base firebird parts cars that I've owned for years, pretty cool info. I knew that there were 1970 only differences but we had no idea that some of the sheetmetal stampings varied. thanks

Great information. Since the list was last updated on page 3 and there are now 10 pages with things I don't see on the list, such as the gas caps for both EES and non EES cars, as well as the plastic covers mentioned for the front seat track bolts?

In any event, I also see some mention of this list or subject coming up before as if this is a common discussion.

Might I suggest this be made a sticky for all to see with an absolute current and up to date list? It would probably help to eliminate all the frequently asked questions and duplicate posts....

On a side note, I just want to say thanks to whom ever it was that mentioned the extra underdash courtesy light that wasn't used (taped up) from the factory.

I never knew that, and having an unrestored car I found that light just as described with green tape holding it up with the wire harness.

It always bugged me to have a passenger side floor light that worked and not have a working light on the driver side. Now this blind old man can see the driver side floor at night

The tape was so old and dry it wasn't sticky anymore, the light slid out of the tape without even tearing. There is a hole in the lower dash right next to it. I simply installed a screw, stuck a bulb in it and it works

Are the square, plastic valance mount "cutouts" only filled in with endura on the bottom of 70 endura bumpers?

Not sure exactly what you are asking but I've always been told there is some difference in a 70 front bumper vs others? Maybe it's 70-72?

I have a couple of them here and the only difference I've noticed is the steel portion of the bumper at the very bottom that is visible through the lower valance openings. Some go straight accross while one of the others I have here have an area that kicks out (to mount something?) Maybe a picture would help?

This should clarify: Sometimes the mounting areas for the plastic valance mounts are devoid of rubber. Is this a year related thing or just random?

You say "plastic" valance which I believe was a year specific valance to begin with.

I have a front nose with a plastic valance still attached to it, I'll go take a look.

That area on the bumper you speak of (but more towards the center of the bumper) is what I was referring to. Some seem to have the metal portion straight accross while others aren't straight at all and have what look like square holes for bumper bolts.

Let me get a couple of pics up. Give me a few.

I think this has been brought up before, but couldn't find a reference to it. I believe the plastic valances were introed in 71.
