the pontiac equivalent to this...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT I think someone got a lot of car for the money. Total luxury full sized convertible with all the options and a beast of an engine.

Pontiac didn't make a "big block". The '69 GP was basically a luxury GTO. They had the drivetrain and other parts. The frame was stretched and the motor sat back farther But. the GP had 2 versions of the 428 with gut ripping torque!

Didn't the '65 Cutlass have the same body as the 64-65 GTO? This longer body looks more like a '66. I had '66 F-85 back in '81.

The car is sort of labeled as a cutlass in the ad,
but it is a starfire. It is a full sized platform car. Has the olds equivalent of a 421 or 428 engine of the year, and is also their most luxury version. So I was wondering, a similar pontiac would be a luxury line, full sized, with the largest displacement engine, available in convertible. I am not sure what pontiac name or line equals the starfire in the ad. And note the underdash record player! Now I wish I had bought it even if it is not a pontiac.

Since the G/P wasn't offered in a vert the Catalina was the comparable chassis.

I would compare it to a 67 GP convert.

For luxury and performance, the the closest comparable Pontiac in 1965, would be a Bonneville 421 Tri-Power. 1962 was the first year of the Starfire, 1966 was the last (till the Monza clone of the 70s). The 1963-66 hardtop models shared the GPs roof, and was a direct competitor to the GP, except Olds offered a convertible, I think, in 65-66. I always thought they were neat cars. I've owned a 66 Toronado and several Cutlasses and 442s over the years, so Olds is my 2nd favorite car.

I would love to own a 1965 Olds Starfire especially a loaded one. I could settle for a Jetfire too.

Jetfire's a whole different ballgame. Especially if the turbo's still on it!

i would compare it more toward the 2 + 2 in the pontiac line. i like how the exhaust exit out the rear rocker trim. but seriously, those year olds are just butt ugly in my opinion.

The Oldsmobile in the EBay ad is NOT a Cutlass at all. It is Olds's sporty big car, based on the full sized 88. A Pontiac equivelent is the 65 Grand Prix or the Bonneville convertible. Chevy Impala SS and Buick Wildcat are other GM big sporty cars. Sales of these faded with mid sized and Pony cars coming on full steam in the late 60's.
And no, the Grand Prix was NOT, nor ever, a 'luxury GTO'. At first was the top of the line full sized Pontiac, from 1962-68. Then in 1969 it was a mid sized personal luxury car, and it was a big hit. Last edited by chicagoland; 04-10-2010 at 09:00 PM. Reason: corrections |

i guess if you were an olds guy back then you could either have a cutlas or a cutlas on steroids since they pretty much look the same except size

I agree about the '65 2+2 . That ebay Olds is not a Cutlass ,but a fullsized Starfire. Oldmobile's sporty fullsize for '65.
