Factory 4-speed '79 Grand Prix SJ
I posted this in the Garage Sale last week, but since it is such a rare beast, I thought I'd post it here also, to get more exposure, and for brevity.
Located in Georgia. Probably was within driving distance of where I lived. I don't think this one has surfaced before on the internet, until now. There was one the same exterior color (2-tone gray & silver) up in the northwest a year or two ago. It had a light blue interior. I don't recall if it was an SJ. It might not have been in running condition either. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT He changed it from an auction to 'Make an Offer'. Buy It Now is a bit high, considereing the cosmetic condition is only average, or worse. However it is a high option car. I would not care for the T-roof option myself. If they weren't so scarce, I would hold out for one without the glass tops. |

Looks like a great time to pick up one of these rare 4speed GPs.
Not my car, but here's another '79 GP 4spd for sale in the New Hampshire Craigslist. Looks like this one has been put on steroids. http://nh.craigslist.org/cto/1657434123.html Here is description: ~~~1979 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ~~~ - $5500 (Pembroke, NH) Date: 2010-03-23, 12:17PM EDT Reply to: sale-yfm97-1657434123@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] SWEET!!!!~~~1979 Grand Prix SJ coupe~~~ One of only 232 cars made in `79 w/a factory 4-speed trans ~~Details~~~ Built 455 HO from a `73 Pont LeMans 4-speed trans from a corvette, not sure what year Newer clutch, Hurst 4-speed shifter 12 bolt posi w/ 3.73 rear gears Factory A/C Factory Power moon roof Factory power disc brakes Factory tach & guage cluster (not idiot lights) Factory original Morrokide vinyl red interior w/front bucket seats Factory original rally steering wheel Factory Black vinyl 1/4 top Pontiac Polycast 15x7 Honeycomb rims from `73 LeMans Drag bars, HD springs True dual exhaust, with factory manifolds, no leaking headers, sounds awesome, exits after rear tires The list goes on!!!! This car was an older build, 10-12 yrs by guesstamate. I was able to email the person who built up this car. This is where I was able to get this info from. He did this car right!! Everything looks factory original! The largest engine offered this year was the 301, or if in Calif. you got a Chevy 305, auto. The 4 speed was a one year only, option, and that makes this car super rare! In the last 3 months, I have also re-keyed the doors and trunk locks, installed a new battery, and starter. I have an AC Delco stereo w/ cassette deck from the era, but its not installed yet, but goes with the car. What the car needs: Paint is all original, and has many swirl marks from years of polishing, and some faded spots, could use a wet sand and polish, but still looks great when washed! The only real rust on the body, is one small spot under the rear pass side window, (about the size of a dime) The rear bumber infill panel, (plasitc), has cracked and broken due to age, needs replacement, can be bought on line Bumbers aren't too bad, but the chrome is showing its age Window gaskets need to be replaced, rubber is cracked and worn Other than these few things, this is a turn key driving machine!!! Frame, body, floors, glass all in great shape! This is a solid car thats fun to drive and just cruise around in. Take it to the drags or to the grocery store! Either way, you'll be smiling!!! For more pics and info, and to make an appointment to see, hear, and drive, Please call Shane @ 234-6352 anytime~! No scammers, test pilots, or tire kickers. May be interested in a trade for the right item. Let me know what you have and we can make a deal! Cash is KING! Price dropped $5500 obo Location: Pembroke, NH it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests |

Nice work posting up the photos from craigslist. Now we have some permanent reference info.
One thing I find disheartening about the NH GP: Without the PHS, you could not be sure this was not just another A/T car (nicely) converted over to four-gear. Too bad no VIN is furnished. If I ever own one of these, it will have a W code 301 in service. |

The brown GP has a Saginaw 4 speed in it. That's how it was built. If you look you will notice the shifter is closer to the dash. Someone modified the black car. The shifter is further back. The shifter has to be moved in order to use a Muncie or T10.

This is the shifter mounting bracket that is used on a Saginaw transmission.

How many of these were built? I had one about 5 years ago and swapped it for a nice '76 Eldo convertible. The right 1/4 was hit fairly hard, but other wise, the car was nice. The VIN number on the 301 4bbl W code engine matched the car. Mine was an LJ model, but with all the SJ stuff. It was originally brown with black bucket seat interior. No roof options. No vinyl. No t-tops. No sunroof. It had p.windows,locks,6 way driver seat, automatic climate control, rear defrost, tach, gages,Delco cassette stereo, sport steering wheel, center console that looked like a shortened version of the Monte Carlo/Malibu style, the Saginaw 4spd with Hurst shifter, 2.93 posi rear, fat sway bars front and rear, and the starburst aluminium wheels. I noticed that the bumper reinforcements were the aluminium ones.

I seem to recall Motor Trend (?) testing one of these when they were new....seem to think it had factory optional wire wheels? Has my memory failed me?
