Engine noise
Started the new motor today and there is a noise, trying to determine what it is?Rod knocking or the cheap headers are not sealing to the head? The motor is a hydrallic roller. Does anyone have any idea or do I need to take the motor back out

Check around your header connections with your hand [carefully] or piece of paper to see if you've got a header leak. Take a look at the simple stuff first.
Good luck Jim

Some of the more aggressive hydraulic rollers I have used make some very strange noises. More pronounced when cold. Can you post a recording of the noise? If not can you describe the noise?

Tell us more about the motor please.
Like does it have a solid style windage tray in it? I've run into occasions where a rod was just barely smacking the windage tray and it sounded a bit like a rod knock. If the noise sounds like it's further up,I'd ask if you hosed down & cleaned the HR lifters to clear out any of the storage lube/protectant or such. Flexplate bolts all tight? If it's more of a ticking sound (ie:exhaust leak),could also be a rocker hitting a valve cover,or a pushrod rubbing against the head or such. Could be lots of possibillities. Bret P. |

The heads are 670,new valves and springs to accomidate the camshaft.2.11 and 1.77. There is no windage tray and the converter bolts are tight. The motor is a 1974 455 bored 30 over. Nothing out of the ordinary. I am going to get access to a smoke machine and stick it in the tail pipe and close the valves on each cylinder untill I check them all. That will tell me if the header is sealed to the head

Just take a 2' length of hose and hold one end up to your ear and move the other end over the header flange. After this continue with the hose over the valve covers and anywhere else you want to isolate the noise. Amazing how effective this technique is in finding the source of strange noises.

It has a stock valley that had the spot welds drilled to remove the lower half and then hammered for clearence.

The noise is more of a knock than a ticking sound

I heard that sound more than once. It can be very loud. I hope that is the problem. Will be a very easy fix for you.
