NASCAR Busch Series 1980 Grand Am
Jack Ingram raced a 1980 Grand Am and won the first NASCAR Bush Series Championship in 1982.
He is currentlly building a replica of the car. It will be 1 of 4 cars at the grand opening of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Spring 2010 in Charlotte N.C. I'm Snowed in, so I thought i'd post a couple pictures I have. Can't seem to resize the Adobe file of the Skoal bandit #11.. |

Great photos, Kent.
I have a 5x4 print of Ingram's Grand Am with Skoal Bandit livery, taken in 1985. Wish I knew how to scan & upload. That third from left pic is Butch Lindley, circa 1980. Someone in Virginia was planning on building a replica of that car in 2002. I read that on the grandamregistry. I was never able to get in contact with them.

I met Jack at his shop last fall. He found my site and needed a part. I happened to be in North Carolina for some training so I brought the part to him after one of my trips home. I had lunch with jack and a bunch of his friends. I had a blast! He is a great guy! He is looking for a 4 speed trans, but my parts car is 5' under snow! Anyone know the driver of the other cars? |

Hey Matt, how long does it take to see the whole display? I mean on a regular day, not on the Grand Opening.
Jack sent me this photo about a month ago. It looks awesome!! The car actually has a part on it that I hand delivered to his shop in Ashville. |

Great to see some more pics on here.
I found some more awsome photos of Butch Lindley's late model sportsman, circa 1980. My computer won't download them off the net, so I have to post links. He is running Firestone meats in this one: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2398/...361ab2.jpg?v=0 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2662/...f017a790ff.jpg In action at Oxford, Maine July 13, 1980: http://www.trueracing.150m.com/truer..._LINDLEY80.JPG I could have gone to that race, but my cousin and his buddies were going to a movie and I tagged along. I had no idea I was missing the most memorable race in Oxford Plains history. |

You know NASCAR wouldn't allow the GA in cup races, said it was limited production, really it was the competitors with more influence whining that kept it out. It was so fast in testing at Daytona that a lot of people swore it was cheating. That front was way slick compared to anything else out there. In '81 Bobby Allison dominated in practice with his '81 Le Mans which used a similar grille rake to the Grand Am and Nascar forced him to have bigger spoilers than the other cars. For some reason they never liked the Pontiacs, at least until Petty started using them.

Big Bill France's favorite car was Pontiac. ALL the pace cares were Pontiac for many years.

Well, they never liked the Grand Am's at any rate, if you remember the '73 that was built and taken to the track only to be "failed" for non specific reasons, then the inspectors couldn't "find time" to re-inspect it until it was too late for the race.

I just saw it "live" on tv, not in person. Sorry for any confusion there! I have no idea, and don't really have any plans to see it unless I end-up in NC at some point! I'd love to tour that facility and some of the NASCAR shops. My Dad still has his black/gold 301/auto '79 Grand Am he bought in '81-82. It's been sitting in storage for almost 20 years, but I'll try to get pics up at some point!

Where exactly did the spoiler come from? I know there was some intrest in it when you were selling the car.
I attached a photo of the spoiler and your "UFO" handy work. Take a good look at the dealer script on one of my other Grand Ams. If you look at the photo of Jacks 80 in bare metal, you will see that there is a little extra work performed on the rear quarter panel. They would cut the quarter above the rear wheels and jack up on the rear of the car to create spoiler affect with the deck lid. The opening was welded and filled. |

A month later a box shows up with a note that they had cut it in half to fit the box but should work fine for what I wanted. It had been used for some testing and was no longer needed and thanks for my service. That's why there are all the extra holes that I did not use.

I just stumbled onto this pic of Morgan Shepherd's 1980 late model sportsman.
He won the series championship that year. edit: Well that sucks, I guess the website software is preventing me from copying it full size. I'll try a thumbnail Last edited by Lightfoot; 01-21-2012 at 10:48 PM. |
