There is usually a two letter code on the drivers side tube right in the middle on the back of the tube looking forward. Find that and go to the Wallace Racing website. They have an online chart.

These numbers were on the passenger side tube, center facing forward also.

This is off of my '67 axle housing. It is "WD" which according to the axle ID chart is a open rear with 2.93 ratio. That is exactly what it was. It is now a 3.55 posi, but that is another story. It might be different for other years, but the codes for other things seems to be very consistent.

Will it accept 3.23 or 3.55's?

Those ratios requires a spacer on your carrier, not the hot tip.
I would get a new Eaton posi and the gears iŽd like to make a fine third member. http://tomsdifferentials.com/catalog.asp?pg=43 |

R3 is a GM 8.5", 2.56:1 limited slip originally installed in a 1968-72 Olds A-body. B is the series (should have bolt on axles). 053 day of the year for assembly. 2nd shift.

Is there a way to figure out what year this rear is?

See if you can see a date code on the webbing of the center section.

Couple more questions, measures 55 1/2" BP to BP, this came out of an A body? Also there is a "A" on the front of the pumpkin between the upper control arm mounts, what is that?
Thanks, G
