What did you do to your steelies ?
I got a spare set of wheels. Oem steel rims. Was hoping to see some pics of what guys have done to dress them up little......I was just gonna paint them black but on second thought I figured maybe there was a creative solution.

My creative solution
Black enamel painted 17X8" steel wheel with a wide red pinstripe, mimics the look of a 14" wheel with a redline tire. Can't forget the poverty caps to finish off the look!
Gloss black powdercoated 15" with no caps, all business. |

Just a little body color paint... Limelight was a wheel color for '69.
Then again black looks kinda mean too...

Cool. Hadn't considered body color.I know I should know what hubcaps those are but what are they called and what model are they from?

Those 'poverty caps' or 'dog dish' caps are the standard hubcaps that came on Pontiacs from '64 -'70 when you didn't order full wheel covers or rally wheels. Your '67 Firebird might have been equipped with them from the factory.
Most of 'em likely got tossed in the trash when folks bought aftermarket wheels or upgraded to full wheel covers. |

I prefer 'em body color myself.
Mine are powdercoated white to match the car,but if I had to do it again,I'd just paint them instead. Why might I say that, well because powdercoat is harder to fix/repair if it chips or such, and sooner or later they will chip, trust me on that. And ask me,the dog-dish/poverty-caps are mandatory if your using steelies. Bret P. |

14" steel w/ poverty caps
powdercoated, great stock lock like b-man says....215 70R14s all around, just got some 15" steel for the rear to put 23560R15s (they'd rub up front)

There are plenty of repops out there. Kinda pricey for what they I think though. Looks good to me.

I spared no expense with chrome lug nuts. I took off the spinner caps. Just body color and black walls on my bird.

I have a set of NOS steel wheels that started out maroon. We painted them with 4 coats of black paint, but even after the first cruise, they had a few chips. I'd recommend having them powder coated in the color of your choice. I too like the standard poverty caps but haven't looked to hard for them yet. JD

Just my opinion, you're better off getting the repros unless you can find NOS or a set that was taken off when new. The mounting lip has a rounded surface that tends to get flattened when the caps are installed and removed. A friend of mine lost a couple of his old caps when they popped of going around corners.
I've got sets of both old and repro and I can't tell the difference- except the repros paint was perfect and there are no dents. In the 2 pictures I posted above- the '69 has the repro caps, alot of street miles and 1/4 mile passes and they haven't budged. The '70 has original caps in that pic.
