Default power steering pump

I need a power steering pump for my 1965 GTO. I noticed that Autozone sales a duralast pump. Has any one used one from Autozone. If so was it an exact replacement?

Thanks,

I believe those pumps are supplied without the resevoir, which is fine as long as yours is not damaged. Your posting makes me wonder if they offer steering boxes, too, and what ratio you'd end up with. Most of us would prefer a faster steering ratio, especially since the steering boxes all look the same externally and have the same casting numbers.

This could be an inexpensive way to get both the pump and steering gear with warranty AND avoid shipping costs for one of the many rebuilders.

If the steering gear had a ratio you didn't like, returning the unit before you installed it would be possible with no consequences to you, the buyer. I'm going to check with them tomorrow. This may be a way for me to install power steering before the engine is in place instead of doing it later when everything is in the way. We all know what these beasts are like without power steering.

Default Pump and gear

Autozone does sell the power steering pump with the reservoir, part #6090.

I would stay away from any steering gear box they say is a quick ratio box, you'll be making 8 point "U" turns, that's been my experience.

A friend just installed one of the quick ratio boxes in his '67. Drove it for the first time this past Friday. 3 Turns lock to lock....a little fast for my tastes, but he says it's not squirrely and he loves it......

Yes they do sell the complete pump. I heard that the bolt holes did not line up as the original one did. I do not know if this is true or the problem was mismatched pump to engine. I may just order it and see.

Thanks,

Why can't you just rebuild the one you've got? You can buy rebuild kits, you know.

Rebuilding your own is always an option.

Yes, I've heard some of the fast ratio boxes have less travel, therefore a wider turning radius.

The pump shaft is worn along with the sleeve. I could rebuild it and install a new sleeve but with a worn pump shaft if it did not leak at first it would eventually leak and I only want to do this one time.
