Phil's car, as ordered new from Jack Hoffman, was delivered from the factory with the NACA/NASA hood, and still bears its original paint to this day. It was optional on certain A-bodies.

That's what I thought. That article said otherwise.

What about the difference in the vented NASA hood and the flat NASA hood? I never understood that.

The '73 hoods had the cowl slats in them, the '74 hoods did not.

74's have the rear hood slots too, like the 73's. It was in 75 that they eliminated the slots.

I thought the slots were dropped for '74...live and learn.

slits, slots, I heard Lemans GTO had the slots, GAs did not. Something to do with hidden wipers vs. non-hidden wipers, the cowl inlets were slightly different and the hood slots were there for ventilation on non-hidden wiper systems. ???

I've never seen any 73-77 A-body that didn't have wipers that tucked under the cowl of the hood. Check the hood on my Luxury LeMans:

Cowl vent slots were dropped for the 1975 model year. I heard a rumor that very late 74A-bodies may have gotten non-vented hoods, but I have never seen evidence of this. Anyone have one?

I know GM Parts discontinued the 73-74 vented NASA hood before or around '77 and you could only get the non-vented 75 NASA hood as a service replacement.

Looks like the NASA hood was originally intended to be for the 73 GTO Ram Air package only. After Ram Air was discontinued it appears the non-functional NASA hood became available for all 73-75 A-bodies, but wasn't well marketed. The non-functional NASA hood was in fact available with any 73-75 A-body, even a 4-door 6 cylinder.

All '73-'77 A and G bodies had the recessed park (hidden) wipers. The '70-'72 A bodies, and the '70-'74 F bodies could have had either design.

ya, I know about the wipers, I was just saying what I had geard many years ago. The hood I cut apart for the scoops in my 77GP was off a 75 Lemans GT. It was non-vented.

So the question remans, why did the earlier hood have vents in it anyway? Anyone know what changed in 75 that the vents went away?

Kind of a side note, but we have diverted away from the main question....

Probably a cost saving measure. I've never heard an official eplaination. Perhaps they found they were't needed.

Possibly noise reduction. IMHO, the cars look cleaner without them. Another side benefit is that the newer hoods don't have all the rot in the structure that the vented hood usually do.

Exclamation

Don't hold your breath.....I'm afraid unless one of us wins or inherits a lot of cash, this project will never get off of the ground.
