I thought he had ram air on that car?

Very cool, I'd love to own it.

Neat car, looks like an HO intake on it.

Probably the early numbered 72 one which was destined for SD use.

Default 73 SD GTO

yes your right, according to Pete Macarthy's Book that intake was to be used on the 73 SD Model. I have over 500 miles on the GTO, I took it to the Woodward dream cruise, and drove it up and down Woodward for three days and thats how I racked up the miles. What a blast it was!

If you have pics of that intake including the casting #S/date codes, i'd love to see them, looks like aluminum with divorced cross over and early choke. As far as any of us that research the SDs, it never made it out on a production '73 SD engine. It'd have a "D" if it isn't an HO intake.

The HPP article had a good write up of it, I think.

Yes, it's in the Jan 2010 issue....yup, that magazine so many bash and call worthless. (I'm going to ad a comment like that everyime something is referenced on here from HPP, it's the only Poncho mag we have so support it people !!)
It does state that the motor was built to the original '73 SD specs, not the production version and that the early SD455 Aluminum intakes did not meet the heat retention/emissions red tape, the few already built made it out the door through the "parts" network.

Just to clarify, the 485640 manifold is believed to be an SD-455 manifold based on its number sequence in relation to other SD components

I don't know how many were produced, but many early 1972 455 HO engines were factory equipped with them. A very detailed inspection shows them to be identical to the typical 488945 1972 HO intake manifold in every respect, which followed for a majority of the year.
