Default Speedometer Swap

I'm looking to change the speedometer from the 100 mph speedometer to the 160 on a 77 Trans Am. I have a 1976 speedometer, so I know it will be a direct swap out. My question is; will I need to do anything else? I've hear I might have to change the speedometer gear in the transmission. Is that true? Thanks!

It's a bolt in.....& a nice upgrade.

Everything else in place will function as is it did with the 100mph unit.

It can be really easy or difficult, depending on your situation. The most important thing is using the correct tachometer. They made two basic style tachs with six differnt style facings. You need ot know which style you need first. The older style used a Non Quartz style clock and the new kinds WITH the Quartz clock. They seemed to switch some time during 1979. What year is your car do you have and what gauge options did it come with?

It's probably not a difficult change. Send me a PM with a picture of the rear of your gauge cluster and I should be able to tell you more.

Some of the gauge restoration folks can even redo your face with teh correct fonts higher but will need recalibration.

Most are just a direct fit? The early 160 had just the emercency light on the bottom. The later ones had brake and seat belt on the bottom. I had a cluster from a 75 that had the 160 mph and 8000 rpm tach and I just took out the 79 100mph and 6000 rpm cluster out and plugged the 75 in and worked just fine. I know have a 6000 rpm tach and a 160mph in my 79.
