Ok, here are some photos to try to demonstrate. the first photo shows how deep the nut is recessed inside the VW pulley on my stock alternator.
The second shows the popular gm pulley on my stock alternator but the the 3rd shows how far it needed to be spaced and it rides on the threaded area of the shaft.

The 4th photo is the 11mm offset gm pulley positioned on stock alternator so the belt lines up. The 5th photo shows there are not too many threads left for the nut. Probably can use it if you lose the lockwasher but I wouldnt recommend that.

Here in the first photo is the shaft length. This is the most important measurement. If anyone has an alternator with a longer shaft, you probably have the option to use any pulley you,d like. This alternator in the pic is one from an 88 grand am, it looks similar to the cs130 but Im not sure what it is. The shaft on this one is a little shorter than the one on my stock alternator.

The 2nd photo shows all 3 pulleys on sockets that are the same height. This is just to show the differences when the faces are all on the same plane.

Just another note, I am really liking the smaller diameter of the VW pulley as the voltage is higher and the lights are not as dim at lower RPMs.

Default Just throwin this out there...

I was just wondering if there would be any interest from others if I purchased a handfull of crank and waterpump pulleys from the junkyard next time I go and machined them to be "bolt on ready". I know not everyone has the equipment. I figured if I made two fixtures it might be worthwhile.

I would be interested in a set of pulleys also.

If you had brought this up earlier I would have jumped on it. Now, since I already have those (but not tweeked yet) it would be a tough call. Depends a lot on the price.

But I agree, if you do this you should be able to sell a ton of these. If you could also do the spacers that would really be a killer item. Might be a good Ebay candidate.

Read post #69. Jimmo lists all the sources for the pulleys and spacers for the conversion.
He lists the source of the spacers as http://www.aluminumspacers.com/
The listed spacers are off the shelf items.
check it out, I found some other spacers I was looking for.
The only other item he would have to fabricate is the power steering pump spacer shown in post #16
Keep up the good work. Jimmo

WOW! pretty cool. Ill have to do some figuring. I actually sent a drawing of the power steering spacer to a guy but he never got back to me with a quote. Now I,m scratchin my head as far as putting together complete kits with all pulleys and fasteners and or just those 3 hard to get parts.
Either way it looks like a trip to the junkyard is in order.

The whine could be caused by a slight misalignment between the pulleys. A straightedge should show that the front and rear of the pulleys are in line. You can use a piece of tubing to listen to each pulley and probably isolate the culprits.

Rusty pulleys can also cause whine.

Jimmo,
Was doing some online research, and found that there are 3 different amp alternators for the 98 Jetta 2.0. Any idea what size the one you got the pulley from was? Don't know if there is a difference in the pulleys.
Thanks,
Russ

It was a Bosch 90 amp. The 98 jetta is my work beater, thats how I discovered that pulley. After searching the junkyard I realized it was under my hood the whole time.

Thanks.
I finally got started a little on mine. Got the stock water pump and crank pulleys off, and used the crank spacer as a pattern to drill the new crank pulley for the Pontiac bolt pattern. Man, that center hole is just a tad small. Was almost tempted to see if I could use a hammer on it to make it fit. :-) But seriously, I think that I could enlarge it with a half round file if nothing else.
Haven't gotten the spacers or power steering pulley yet. Have to wait a bit before I can start spending money on the car again.

Russ,
While ya have that stuff off, do ya think you can post a measurement of the thickness of the crank pulley spacer? Im just curious and I dont have one to measure.

I'll try to remember to take it to work. I don't have anything but a tape measure here at home, and I am thinking you will need a little more accuracy than that. :-)

Ok, I asked a machinist type here at work to measure the thickness of that plate. He said it is "108+/-2". I guess that means 0.108 inches? He said it was almost 7/64ths of an inch. Or could it the 108 have been millimeters? Hope those numbers mean something to you. :-)

Awesome! thanks. This answered a question from back in post # 8 about using that behind the crank pulley as a spacer instead of the ac pulley. The AC pulley is about .075 and that ring you measured being .108 is a .043 difference. If that is used as a spacer its gonna put the crank pulley .043" further forward. This might work in some cases and not in others.
I have been back to the junkyard and collected some pulleys and I am finding that no two measure exactly the same but so far are within about 3/32" in depth. The factory pulleys are just stamped out and the consistency is a little off from one to the next but if its good enough for factory, its good enough for me.
Mine are within about .020" alignment and there have been no issues so far. I know in an earlier post I had mentioned a low whine. I probably never should have mentioned it as it seemed to alarm some people. Its not really a whine, its difficult to explain the sound and its practically inaudible. Its more or less just a different sound than I was used to hearing from the stock v belts. If I have time Ill take another video as I put a clutch fan back in there and no longer have the noise of the flex fan drowning out all the other noises.

Oh by the way I got a few triangle spacers cut out. They are not in my hands yet but as soon as I can pickem up Ill post a pic.
