Sheet Metal Intake I have been working on.
Here are some pictures to my winter/spring project this year. I have wanted to make this thing for years but finally it's happening. I used Pipemax to get the runner length but I am by no means an expert. I'm just an injection mold designer at a machine shop/former machinist/die hard Pontiac guy. I made everything else but with the runners my co-worker set up the programs for me (and run the 1st one). Way more time than I expected. Nothing is welded yet it's just pieced together. I can tig but I want the welds to be nice. I countersunk the runners into the flanges for perfect alignment and the runners bolt to the plenum. If/when my port size changes I can replace the runners/flanges and not have to start all over. I have 2 RS King Demon carbs but the 2nd still has to be converted to E-85. Not sure if I want to use 1095 or 1195 sleeves in them.

Can you reproduce it since it must all be CNC? I'm thinking there could be a market for them if you were inclinded to sell them. You could at least recoup your developmental time. Outstanding work. Sell it in kit form and let the end user weld it up. Mark L

I just hope it works. My Comp 9000 just clears. Not sure how a MSD billet would fit. I think it's taller but has a smaller dia.

How did you calculate runner taper? |

I looked at ALOT of intakes and just came up up with what I believe will work good for the most part. I may be too wide if anything.

Very neat piece Todd. Are you planning to have it at Norwalk? What is the plenum volume and the beginning runner area? Cool stuff right there.

That I would have to check with at work. I used the machines after work and most of the time they are still machining tooling. The main thing is everyone has different size ports.

Runner taper is like voodoo magic, no one wants to discuss the formula if there is one. However the people I spoke to were quick to point out out that for a 1000 they could sell me cnc'd taper runners. |

If you could sell the parts for a reasonable price and have the buyer fit and weld them up, you just might have a market for it.
I would be interested. |

Todd, that's a nice piece of engineering with a lot of time and hard work involved.

Nice things goin on there! I've been considering doing an EFI intake that incorporates an A/W intercooler core.
Instead of tig here's something I found that works very well. http://www.aluminumrepair.com/ This is NOT the junk you might have seen sold at car shows etc. years ago with some guy filling holes in a beer can. This stuff is very strong, machineable and relatively easy to work with and high enough melting point to be plenty adequate for intake use. Some guys on YB are using it for cylinder head work... but I would call the company if it involved an exhaust port or combustion chamber myself. http://www.aluminumrepair.com/video_new.asp (This takes awhile to load it's a 6 min video) http://www.aluminumrepair.com/video/newweb.html (This is a shorter version.) Also somewhat related, I have done some air cleaner/airpan work using no lead plumbing type silver solder and flux. very easy to learn and I can promise you you'll tear the sheetmetal before you break the solder joint. My drop base air cleaner bottom interfered with my thermoquads accellerator pump arm. I cut the airhorn section out and replaced it with a Mopar TQ aircleaner airhorn. That base has been in use probably 20+ years and many cars needing no further attention. My point here is you dont always have to tig or fusion weld to get great results. Sometimes brazing/soldering comes in handy just to get different metals joined together. Last edited by BruceWilkie; 04-22-2012 at 05:32 PM. |
