V8 head bolt removal order
Dumb question of the day, on a Pontiac V8, is there any special order to removing the head bolts?

Other than on a second gen TA the back bolt by the AC box and sometimes the power booster have to stay in the head when you pull them in the car.

Definitely, ALWAYS some tricks to installing heads on a Pontiac.
Another thing to remember is to identify (in some manner) the left head (driver's side) from the right (passenger side) head. If you have a 65 up head, the passenger side head (with the heater nipple located by the firewall) is always a good clue for proper installation. I have actually seen guys install the heads flipped side for side and then call me when they said that "the intake will not go on right. The water hose, thermostat is by the firewall and there was no way the distributor is going to fit." When you are in a hurry you always have this stuff happen. Tom Vaught

OK, I'll disagree.
I crack them all loose in reverse torque-sequence order--working from outside to middle. Once they're all a quarter- or half-turn loose, remove them in reverse torque-sequence order. |

For best results, the head bolts against the fire wall go along for the ride, as the head is removed/installed.

While on the subject of removal, I can't ever recall seeing a torque pattern for install in any Pontiac-printed Service Manual. Is my memory failing me on that?

I've seen just recently what looks to be a GM tightening sequence copied onto the web. Of course I can't find it now, it's in my favorites somewhere.

I use an impact wrench for removal - although I reverse order the install procedure, so I loosen number 10, 9, 8 and so forth. All my Pontiac service manuals list the tightening sequence. Nothing more than a spiral starting from the center outward:
8.....4.....1.....5.....9 7.....3.....2.....6.. .10
