I've been into Pontiacs for over 20 years and know nothing on the OHC 6 motor. Came across a guy who offered one up for sale to me today for his asking of $500. It's a 4 bbl... Had a q-jet on it(I saw with my own eyes). What do I look for, at, and consider? Certain #'s to look for and where? Is the a book or some specific literature to look for on this? This has really perked my interest.. I'm not looking to flip it, just want to know something about it before I make another trip to get it. The guy has it sitting on a shelf in his barn and I'd love to put it into one of my cars in the stable...Thanks in advance, Mike

Mike,
Some Pic's would be helpful, as for a book on these engines, the best that I have found is the 1967 Pontiac shop Manual. It goes much more in depth than the other years for these engines. As for what its worth, that of course depends on condition, and completeness of the engine. They also changed a few parts in every year they made them, small differances but things like does it have an aluminum (1966) or fiberglass (67-69) timing belt cover? Is it a 230 or 250 Cubic inch engine? Does it have all the needed carb and throttle linkage? Correct Q-jet? What assessory brackets does it have? Does it have matching water pump pulley? They changed the fan belt spacing on the 68-69 engines and the belts are spaced a little farther apart. I had a 67 Tempest that kept throwing the Alt & PS belts, come to find out it had a 68 water pump pulley on it, installed a 66-67 pulley, and the problem was solved. Manual or auto trans engine? Does it have the original aircleaner assembly? Me, I would not hesitate at 500 for a 69 Manual trans engine that was complete, but would really have to check it over. What part of MI is the engine located? Pic's would be a great help in determining value.

If it's a 4bbl then it's likely a Sprint-6 and usually worth more than the 500 he's asking.

I'll have to look into it some more. Thank you for the info. I was pressed for time as I had just loaded a rolling frame from a Judge he parted (DUH)and two complete as pulled '71 400 motors. He asked if I'd be interested in another Pontiac motor. I say sure! It was on the second shelf behind a bunch of stuff and I looked the q-jet in the eye, so I know what I saw. No pulley's and I couldn't tell what the timing cover was made of, not that I knew to see if there's a difference. Sounds like alot of possibilities with these powerplants. Motor is in northern Indiana. I may head back there in a few month's to look and consider some more once I know a bit more what to look for. Funny thing is, Pontiac's weren't his bag... Just wanted the stuff gone and sold it to me for scrap rate. Mike

Have the guy check what the engine code is. It is by the oil filler tube. That two character code can tell you what year size and head if it is original. Also, ask him to get the code from the QJet and someone here can run the numbers against what came with the Sprints.

Could be a high-bred engine, basically a 1bbl engine with a 4bbl intake/exhaust bolted to it. Unless you're going for a date code, I wouldn't pay more than $250-$300 unless you hear it running and running good. If it's running good I could see paying $500. From the condition you're describing I'd draw the line at $200 unless you can prove it's one of those hen teeth engine Jeff mentioned, namely the '69 Sprint engine with the manual transmission. Then maybe $500 IF the cam is servicable.

The numbers will tell the story more then just seeing a 4BC as stated above many many many 1BC engines out there with 4BC setups bolted on.
The # on the side of the block will really only give you the year, Blocks-Casting# 9782, 9783, 9784. 66’ 9785, 9786, 9787, 9788, 9789. 67’ 9790, 9791, 9792, 9793. 68’ 9794, 9795, 9796, 9797, 9798. 69’ The CODE letters will help as long as block has not been decked.
