My guess would be to keep stuff/debris from getting in there. For different portions of the build the engine would be horizontal and things could fall into the ports.

We do that with open intake manifolds, etc: close them off with a plastic cap for shipping.

Here is a rare photo of Roy Gay in a '67 Firebird.

The sole surviving XB-70 Valkyrie used to sit out on the tarmac at the USAF Museum in Dayton OH. Eventually, they built a hangar to showcase the big white bird. Then as the museum grew, they moved it again to another hangar, and now you need to sign up for a special tour just to see it.

We see many Exotic Aircraft from Ellington Field - et al - fly over our skies here day and night:

Such as this WB-57 on Ramp at Ellington Field
http://mtp.mjmahoney.net/www/images/ave/rDSCN3975.jpg

And this 377SGT Training Super Guppy aka: “Vomit Comet” flew over our house last Spring
http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviatio.../8/1632805.jpg

I often see an aircraft that I usually hear - its unique backward pointing prop driven airvraft - BEFORE actually seeing it in the sky. It has a long slender nose and overall shape like the retired XB-70 super sonic but this one is “twin-back-fired-propeller” driven!

Anyone know what this experimental aircraft is?

USS Iowa broadside blast. Check out the water. The entire ship actually slides in the water when it unleashes all of its guns in one salvo.

Some famous pics of workers building skyscrapers. I don't if these guys were crazy, just confident, or needed the money.

Mike, I was told lots of Native American Indians did that sort of work. They have a better sense of balance.

going thru old pix and found these...

...I ordered this car new in the spring of 1969 and owned it until I went in the USAF in March 1971.....69 Chevelle SS 396/375 4-spd...the car was originally triple black but I had it repainted "Steel Cities Gray" after some minor altercations with other objects, it even had a long tear in the hood from a fan blade coming off when it was almost new...2 engines, 2 trannys, clutches, 5 sets of tires and 80K miles in less than 2 years...it was a very tired car, but still ran like a champ...no power accessories of any kind, it even had a manual convertible top

...while stationed overseas in 1972, I heard the car was destroyed by the next owner

Thanks! That may be it. Although from the YouTube comments leads one to believe they were all distroyed.
The one Im talking about is still flying...now that I think of it's approach it is coming in from the West towards Ellington in the East,
possibly the one mentioned in comments repaired in San Antonio.

IIRC: There was a reality series about these steel workers and their history.

This fine looking woman seems to like this old "T"! I wonder if she will only use it for church on Sundays.
