Trans Am Defrost Switch Question
Hi Everyone,
I have two defrost switches, but can't tell which year Firebird or Trans Am they belong to. Both look identical in the front, but the rear are different. The switch on the left in each picture has three pins and clicks when moved up or down. The switch on the right has 4 pins and toggles up or down, but doesn't click. Does anyone have any idea which is for what? I want to say that the one on the right is late model since I have a few of them, but I have no idea on the other one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I don't remember the change point.
Is there any ink numbers stamped? First picture, left one is older than right one. |

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately there is no part # located anywhere on any of the swtiches I have. I've been doing a lot of research on this and it' seems you're correct. The one on the left is an older model. It appears there is actually a 3rd type specifically for 1970 (Fan style). Still trying to define the year breakdown if anyone knows.

My 1976 esprit was an early car on the line with a production number of 752 on the cowl tag. In 76, they started to use the newer heater control panel. However my car, being so early on the line has the one found on 1975 and earlier cars. Anyways to the point. the defrost switch locks or toggles into place where the other defrost switches I have, click and return to neutral position when pressed up or down. They are from 77-81 Firebird parts cars. So was 76 when the switches changed or 77?

Pictured are '74 (red light) and '75 (green light) switches. Notice the toggle arm between the two. Before the '74 light, they used green too (only it was backlight by a bulb, '74-on were diodes). The '75 switch was used in '76 until they switched to the 63A alternator, then the newer style was used.
Therefore, I believe yours on the left is a 1975, '76 (first design) unit. |
