Default What's the word about the billet cranks sold a few years back?

I have been out of the hobby now for 5 years but just before leaving I bought a bunch of HD parts for a turbo project. One of them was the billet cranks being sold by Ken of Ken's Speed Shop in Florida. I'm going to sell this crank but not sure for how much since I don't know how they did in the field. Any info would be helpful. Let me know what you know.
Thanks

I think their reliability is excellent, but their value went down when more forged cranks became available.

I've got one in a 500" 695 HP motor that has 25 dyno pulls on it,hopefully finally going in the car soon. So they will last at least that long!

I had a 4.5 stroke billet crank from Ken's, never a problem with it. I agree the value went down when the forged cranks came out, but I'd still feel better with the billet crank.

Bought a scat billet in 07... never had a problem at 2000hp and probably 50 passes... sold the crank and its still going as far as i know in a lower hp combo. I also sold a new 4.5 scat billet for $1300 a couple years ago...

Default Billit Crank

I bought one of Kens crank for my 535 build. It was a Cryogenic treated unit for 1,300.00 shipped to my door. They are very nice pieces and it checked out spot on. I belive Ken checked out all the cranks before they went out the door. I am not 100% sure but I think they came from Ohio Crankshaft.

I can't say definitely but I think they were Ohio Cranks. Ken did not disclose the supplier.

Surprised that it lasted that long.

You were making some power and considering that it WAS NOT A MOLDEX CRANKSHAFT!

It is well known that Moldex is top tier, but you did have nice things to say about the SCAT billets when they came out, after you got to check some out, if memory serves. Didn't you? Or am I confusing your comments with the forgings?

Tom,
Moldex is certainly a superior piece but to say you are surprised the billet Ron had lasted that long in a naturally aspirated engine is a bit over board. I didnt have a bit of trouble with my non Moldex billet at 2000hp. My guess is something else caused his crank failure...

We received one of the early billets from Ohio Crankshaft, we did have to do some machine work to it as it wasn't correct. The crank was also lightened and was used in our 59 Catalina without issue.

Knowing Tom...I think his comment was meant to be tongue in cheek. You know how those old guys are, they don't know how to you emoticons to express inflection in their statement.

I think mine had a big fillet and we had to turn it down 0.010 to fit bearings. There are some narrower Mahle bearings out there now.

We never figured out why the crank failed. The bearings looked new. The crank had been lightened and knife cut and we wondered if they took a little to much out when it was machined.

I have one in my 525. The engine makes about 800hp and has over 1000passes on it. Around 600 in a 3000lb car and around 400 in a 3500lb car.

If I thought that there was anything wrong with the scat cranks I would not own 3 of the things. I had the first cranks checked out by our metallurgy guys and they were fine. Just not a Moldex crank which I also have purchased several of over the years.

Just saying hello to Ron, Brian as you figured out.
