I have 225/60R15 on my 60 Pont and I can tell you that you have raise the body relative to the rear end in order to get them off on the rear...this is with a 7 inch wide rim. I doubt that the 255s will fit on the rear..

I'll echo that...I've got 205/70/15 on my 58 Safari and it's not easy getting the tire/rim off the car. (7 inch rims) I don't see 255s fitting, even with an offset.
So while the fitment tool might give you running clearance, it might not give you the on-off issues. Maybe find someone that has a comparable size tire/rim and talk them into letting you try it on your car.

Part of the issue is that these cars were made to use the bumper jack for the most part. I think back then if you had the "oversize" tire from the factory, if you jacked the wheel off the ground using the axle only you probably couldn't get them off or it would have been difficult....

I had 15x7s with 235/70/15 on the rear of my 58 for a time, and its a very tight fit even with raising it up by the frame. I wouldnt think that you would get a 15x8 up in there.
