Default 65 throttle cable

Several years ago when i bought my GTO i think it had a 'tag' on the cable. Am i imagining this or should it have one? I think it was blue and maybe the part number on it.

I have 45,000 original miles on my 65 GTO and it has 4bbl and auto. No sign of a tag or tape. On a NOS cable I bought for a 64, there is a blue tape with no number. It has a paper tag wired with the part number.

I bought this car in 1983. I have some pics from back then but none showing the cable.

Maybe it was a replacement cable that somebody put on in the years before i bought it. I remember it being one of those plastic type sticky tape tags wrapped around it. I had a carb fire in the early 90s that destroyed the cable,i now have a repro on the car.
I have never seen another a car with the tag.

Mine has had the blueish purple tape with NO part # since I bought it from BOB V. in 1990. He always calls my car HIS parts car!
A little hard to pick out but it is there. Pic #1 straight behind yellow return spring and below #2 plug wire. Second pic, right beside the center carb chrome lid. "bill"

At least in 1964, I believe the cables contained two Tags. The first tag is located about 3/4 in. out from the flared fitting. It is 11/32 in. wide, and was wrapped around the cable. It is white, with a plasticized coating. The numbers on this tape were black, but not legible.
The second tag is 1 in. wide by about 2 in. long. One side lists the part and group numbers, and the second side shows GM, General Motors Parts Div., and the address.
The Part No. for this cable reads 9777042 and Group No. 3.430

Here is another picture of the reverse side of the tag. The tag is very brittle, and is breaking up on me. The lettering is black on a white background. No plastic film was used on this tag. This tag was loose on the cable, so I have no idea as to its initial position on the cable. Others that I have seen places this tag a little past mid-way on the cable.

The MPC lists the tag color for the '64 tri-power as being red. What I can recall, and my memory is failing fast, this tag was an off-red, more of a pinkish/red.

WERE THE CABLES WITH 2 TAGS ASSY. LINE INSTALLED OR REPLACEMENT CABLES? GENERALLY SPEAKING, I DID NOT THINK GR. NUMBERS WERE ON LINE INSTALLED PARTS. THAT HAS BEEN DISCUSSED BEFORE IN THIS FORUM, BUT I CAN'T LOCATE IT NOW. I'M SURE OTHERS REMEMBER THE THREAD. "bill"

Just for comparison, EBAY has a '64 TP cable selling for 4 more days. It has red marker tape and tag on carb end.

Well I went out and looked at my never removed/ replaced Tri-Power Throttle cable and it does not have any tags. The cable color of the plastic is also black vs the white plastic (in the Ebay ad).

Both 4bbl. and Tri-Power cables for 1964 have the 3 holes at the end. I thought that there is a difference in the total length??
Pic below from a 64 magazine shows a tag on cable of a test 4bbl. GTO and the 3 holes.

Note - This 64 also has the black curved tip fan, and wire looms with the plastic clip on top (not the rubber dip style).

Tom the color of the liner is all over the place. I collected about 3 NOS cables since I rebuilt the aftermarket cable showing a "how to" here at the forum, and found differences in the liner color. I have a 64 tempest 6cyl with a blue liner and a V-8 with white and another used one with black. I have one that looks like the ebay example, possibly showing a more antique white. I noticed that two of the carb end ferrules are not quite identical nor are they crimped at the same location. They both follow the general design for fit and function but obviously were not created from one Brown and Sharpe cam. The differences are probably between suppliers, with a little liberal interp of the plans at their plant.

Probably not worth mentioning, but the cable for sale on ebay is a service replacement. The original number is 9776285. The 9777043 is the replacement. No colors are assigned in the two 1964 parts books from different revision times. 1966 MPC shows color identification on cables.

Also to mention, in Chris's pic, the firewall wire clip behind the dist. seems bright, not coated or black. "Bill"!

One comment, my 65 GTO has the factory 3x2 throttle cable, and, I mentioned the green tape, but, it also has a light blue ( Robin's Egg), plastic shielding shroud on the wire, I have seen several NOS that had the same Robin's Egg , and I have seen black.
Also, the 66 3x2 has red tape, but I sold it so long ago, I can't remember the plastic
cover color. I am imagining black, but.....???? lol too darn old. Larry B.
