My smoky 400 with probably half the torque of yours does just fine off the line with an m21 and 3.55's in the back, you should be fine for just street driving.

X2 on the info from your buddy.

I had a bad input shaft bearing (in the trans) caused by a bad ball bearing in the crankshaft/flywheel. Trans would pop out of gear in 4th gear a lot.

Fixed the input shaft bearing (in the trans), fixed the bad ball bearing in the crankshaft/flywheel by going to a bronze bushing and all was good. My input shaft bearing was NOT in good shape. In 4th gear, we have a direct transfer of power only thru the main shaft. Anything in the main shaft not perfect the trans will have issues.

Bill, did you get it back together?
After using an M21 behind a stock 400 and 355 gears for years I was happy when I went back to the M20,it felt like I had a first gear again.

Just picked up the trans, not only was the input shaft too worn, the mid plate was cracked. Jet Boat Bill install a new anodized one to replace it and shimmed the input shaft. Getting ready for the bench press.

Will post results after it is back on the road, hopefully in a few hours.

The trans went in real smoothly since I didn't have to do the clutch plate and everything was in alignment. I did have issues with the shifter linkage but got those worked out today.

That Rock crusher whine is INSANE! Love it! The whine increases in pitch/frequency as I upshift and totaly complements the sound of the 461!
Had people already ask what was that noise!
Have to slip the clutch a bit to get it rolling with the 2.2 first gear but the RPM's don't drop much at all on each sshift up. Taking it easy while the new gears and bearings are getting used to each other but it kicks azz!

It'd be better with 3:55's Bill, but since you live in the land of ....FLAT.... it might work out ok.
