Default Loose spider gears

I'm working on a '65 a-body 3.08 open rear (installed new seals, bearings, etc.) and have gears set up with backlash within spec and a decent pattern. I noticed there was excessive play when I turned an axle - looking inside it appears that the spider gears were loose, but no visible damage.

I had a spare 2.56 rear for parts that was in good working order when it was retired. I took the side gears, spider gears and shaft from it and swapped it in, and there still appears to be a lot of play.

Right now I can slide the top spider gear on the shaft quite a bit (1/8"?) when it is installed - I'm thinking this shouldn't be possible and is where the play is coming from.

Does this mean my carrier is worn? Can I safely shim the side gears (or spider gears) to tighten the fit, or will this cause problems?
