Default Found a '87 T-Type Regal and a '71 Ranchero today

Both cars do not run but both have straight bodies and decent interior. The owner of the T-type claims it has 300,000+ miles with one engine and trans rebuild (he has owned it since 1988). The guy with the Ranchero says it has jumped time. The interior in the ranchero is almost like new,it is really clean with 130,000 showing. Both owner said they take $5000 for either car. Supposedly the Regal has every factory option avail that year incl sunroof, power dr seat and digital dash. What do yall think?
Production # on the T-types,
Turbo T (WE4)
1,547 Produced
245 HP @ 4400 RPM
355 ft-lbs of torque at 2000 RPM

i second that opinion only because the 87 turbo regal is too far gone...if the regal would have been as decent as the ranchero, it would be regal all the way. but i dont think either one of them are worth 5k......

SE,
You saw them in person, how bad is the Regal body-wise? It just looks really dirty in the pics. Either way they both do seem overpriced as non-running resto projects. More like the 3000 range to me if you are in the mood to restore them. Flipping at that price is out of the question in my opinion.

The body on the Regal was nice but the inside smell a little moldy. The Ranchero was the better looking car but the Regal has the V-6 Turbo cool factor.

Finding trim parts for the Buick, hmmmmm

Ranchero looks much better. Too bad it's not a 351 4V car.

Just caught this thread......

The Turbo Regals I know quite abit about...the 5 grand price is on the high side in my opinion. (I have sold over 320 of them). Its probably a good $3500 car as it could go either way restored or part it out.

Car is quite unusual has a half padded roof option. Mostly this option appeared on the Limited Turbo-Ts in 1987. actually had two style padded roof options regular as shown also a rarer one where padding was thicker...

In 1987 they were not T-Types but rather Turbo-Ts....confusing but that is how it played out.
Car is not a WE4 as is indicatd with 1,547 produced. WE4 production was 1,547 but this is not one of them.

All WE4 were black with a grey gut...basically a lighter version of the Grand National.

I would go with the ford, At least it was under a carport Not for 5k tho. The buick guts look very good, But if you smell mustey And it looks like it has been sitting outside for a long time, My 2 cents.

I am pretty partial to the Ranchero- I had a '71 Squire with a 351-C 2V. I sold it to a guy in Switzerland last year. That one looks pretty nice, I'd lean that way, especially if the price was firm. I think that Mr. Kirban is right about the Buick.

At those prices I would have to say it's his polite way of saying they're not for sale.

I would go for the ranchero. That thing looks straight and has aftermarket rims on it. Somebody put some money into it.

You could verify the miles by hooking up a battery. Digital odometer should read up to 999,999.

I'm partial to the Regal because I have Buick blood coursing through my veins. But I wouldn't go over $3,000 being it isn't running. $3500 if it did run. As it sits, my 'jump on it' price would be $2,000.
Why he thinks it's worth $5,000 with that many miles I don't know. He needs to put some sweat equity into it before he asks for that.
It'll need a lot of work just to get the nature fallout cleaned out of the cowling/heater box/trunk seals. That's definately why the musty odor is present.

Cool

agree, with Dennis and lightfoot, the Buick is worth about 3K as is, it will need alot of TLC to get it in running order again, I bought one for 2K back in 2000, with 97K miles on it, 1 owner, neglected, but complete, had minor front damage and a seized turbo, but was a 87 WE4 Turbo T, spent $1500 on it getting it in dependable shape mechanically. made the mistake of selling it for 4K because i was laid off from work, got called back 2 weeks after selling it DOLP!!

For 3k that Ranchero would be a sweet little parts hauler!

I like the Ford better. Probably does not have 300,000 plus miles on it either.

One of the main reasons why I sold the Ranchero was that the cab was really too small for me to drive comfortably. I am 6'2" and while that is not huge, it didn't have nearly enough leg room. I drove it to Hershey in 2011 and back and thought I would need physical therapy afterward. I hope the new owner is shorter than me!

Exactly why it would be foolish to pay over $3000 for the one se428bandit found. He has to assume the turbo is lunched if it is not running. It's the primary suspect. Engine could also be sick.

BTW, that was a nice score on the Regal T. I love seeing people make sensible purchases like that and saving great vehicles from falling into oblivion. Sorry you had it slip through your fingers.
In 1996, I scored an '89 LeSabre T-type from the original owner with similar damage on pass side: got the damage fixed for a nominal fee and had a cool daily driver for three years while I put it over 200K.

P.S. guess whats going to become of the turbo Regal if someone doesn't relieve the current owner of possession? If he won't sell because he wants his price, it will deteriorate so bad NO ONE will want it, then when the guy needs money he'll haul it to the scrap metal yard.
It's already halfway there.

Thumbs up

Lightfoot, My 87 T still ran and drove albeit poorly from being neglected, had original plugs, air filter still in it, had a trailer hitch setup welded to the back frame rails, it hung below the gas tank, (had to cut it off to get leaking gas tank out to replace it with a new one, there was NO WAY it was gonna stay on anyways LOL) car was solid with only minor rust issues (deck lid, bottom corner of 1 door) I had the parts rounded up to fix front damage too (got with local Buick guys who hooked me up) plugs, wires, cleaning intercooler, replacing all the specially molded vacumn lines that were heat cracked around the turbo area, had a local turbo buick guy (Kent Rudbeck) rebuild the turbo for me, he owned a 7 second twin turbo'ed V6 regal at the time, so i figured he knew what he was doing! LOL. guy i sold it to finished it and sent me a few pics, turned out nice! BTW PY Member Dennis Kirban put out a book on "how to buy a turbo buick" a few years back, very informative on what to look for when buying one of these cars.
