Default 65 LeMans

Picked this up a couple years ago as a parts car for the 65 GTO, mostly the interior pieces and a few other small items. RAJohn said it had too much rust, to me it is light rust and a great place to start.

Here it is sans most of the parts needed for the GTO.

Started sanding on it a couple weeks ago, and pulling things apart so I can fix the rust. Its a huge difference between the GTO and this one. I have one more spot on the pass side quarter, some small floor patches to make, and the rear window channel to repair, and the rust is done. I could have it painted and drivable next month really easy if things go well around here.

This is the 455 going in it, with ported 670 heads and a mild UD 280/288 cam. It will run E85 like the 70 GTO does. I have the heads laying around and race gas is stupid expensive, but E85 is cheaper than pump gas and makes more power, so it is a no brainer.

Decided drum brakes are too scary so I got some control arms to use F body spindles from the parts Camaro I have here. Might end up putting these on the 70 GTO instead, and using its factory discs on this one, but that is lots of work.

The windshield channel is mostly there, just a few small patches needed done and the dash was still attached! So very different from the GTO.

Patched channel.

Patched the other fender and now I am just waiting to do the filler work on it after grinding it down the other day.

Yanked the mighty 326/ST300, but still have no place to put it. Might build a T bucket and throw it on there just to make it easy to move around.

Patched the pass side quarter yesterday, it had a ton of lead in it so I had to get that off before I could weld.

Drivers side came out nice, this thing might look better than the GTO does. It should really, since I am starting with a much nicer body.

Waiting for its 455 and new spindles.

Will get more work done today, want to get it in primer yet this week. Need to get the shop ready for that and move a bunch of stuff. No small task, but the nice weather is on its way out soon, so I need to get going on this thing so it doesnt have to sleep inside all winter.

Its still here, runs, drives, needs a few small things along with some tuning. Dave is too busy to drive it this summer, and his daughter ran off with a kid that cant keep a job and filed for divorce. So its complicated, but Dave and I are still ok even if his daughter is not using her brain.

Im doing this one so its drivable, and on a small budget. I need something to do, and a quick project like this fits the bill to keeping me busy.

LOL - I've always said that a T bucket is little more than an engine stand that you can drive....

I like that sentiment Keith, driving an engine stand. Have everything I need to build one except the radiator and front end. Will probably just build a body for it out of fiberglass and odds and ends.

Have to move, so this thing just went into overdrive. Also working on buying some land so I can put up a shop and a place to live. Some cars are going to find new homes next month, just so I can do all of this without touching my income.

Got the engine and trans in it. Swapped the guts from a Chevy truck Th400 into a BOP case, it has the deep pan, more clutch discs, and a 34 element sprag in it. Should be good to go. 670 headed 455 running E85 ahead of a 3000 stall should move it well. I have a choice of 2.93 Olds rear, or a 9" that I need to swap some brackets so it fits right. I have a bunch of gears for the 9", so lots of choices there.

That is going to be a lot of compression. Maybe too much?

Not necessarily for E85 - which has an octane rating somewhere between 95 and 100.

13:1 is easy with E85, no problems with detonation at all in my other 455 with that much compression, so 11:1 is super easy for it.

Got more done today, but nothing would really show in the pics. Bolted the headers up with new gaskets, ran the valves, and did more sanding. More will happen tomorrow, lots more. Was up late taking pictures of the stars and galaxy we live in tonight, which is why I am up so late.

Almost ready to start shooting primer. Have the metal work done, just need to clean up and prep the car. Having nice weather lately, so it should go quick.

The window channels werent too bad, they are done now. Did the rear window today, had lots more metal than the GTO did.

Well it has paint on it, and despite safety gear, a new respirator, and not getting any on my skin, I think I am once again sensitized to that crap. A little short of breath, but I am hoping it goes away. At least I know how to get rid of it now, and it wont take months to figure it out. So bonus there, but drawback that I am probably done painting cars myself... at least after this one is done.

Its going to be two tone, blue on bottom, gold on top. The first coat of blue went on, and I got some runs in it along with some bugs. Annoying but I can sand them out easily, and there is still plenty of paint left to do the small spot repairs.

Behold the $300 paint job, yes that includes the patch panels! Still needs a pinstripe between the colors, and I want to shoot the blue again because it was too dark in the shop, but for now it is good to go. I will keep the left over blue for next year when I have a better shop to paint it.

The glass is back in it, just put the old stuff in because its in ok shape and its already here.

The Tempest grill gets the nod, much lighter and simpler than the LeMans or GTO parts.

Then Tempest taillights with the LeMans GTO center, I think it looks ok, and only hard core guys will notice it, unless its parked next to the GTO.
