The 9 would be in the same place as the W if it had a 3.73 or numerically higher gear. The W would be absent.

Oay I get it. They are stating the transmission choice, 9 would be for the M21 close ratio and the W is for the M20 wide ratio. In the picture the W almost looks different almost looks larger? Does the number sequence below mean anything? Can it be decoded?

64woodwheel is correct on the '9' question.
I had misinterpreted the question. The numbers below the engine code is called the Engine Unit Number or Motor Unit Number. I have a web page that I collect this data. EUN Submission Form And the Search form: EUN Numbers

No, that is incorrect. 9 just means its a 3 speed or 4 speed for a 3.73 or numerically higher gear ratio. It was a different transmission assembly because it had a different speedo drive gear, not because it was a close ratio 4 speed.

That is because it was stamped at the assembly plant, not the engine plant. They must not have had the exact same punch set.

My 3.90 rear axle apparently was swapped by the zone office because the build sheet says 3.23 rear axle ratio (April build). The trans (speedo gear parts were also changed) by them as the speedometer was correct for the vehicle speed on the road.
The Block is stamped 76XW vs what I am told should have been 76X9 for the 3.90 gear set. Lots of changes made to my car apparently. Wood Dash, Kit linkage, 3.90 gear, no power brakes, "L" camshaft. Tom Vaught

Was the w and 9 stampings done at all plants? I think my car was built in Pontiac Michigan. Also I tried the EUN search and nothing came up. Would PHS have a record of that?

Know the "W" stamp was done at the KC Plant for sure!

Yes, it was supposed to have been done for the appropriate applications, but I think there are examples of it not being done or being done incorrectly.
Only PHS documents for certain plants have the EUN. I know Fremont's do, and Pontiac's do not. You will also find the EUN for your car on the Ident-O-Plate in the Owner Protection Plan booklet that came in the glove box of your car when new. John V. (a member on this board) keeps a database of known EUNs and casting dates to help people determine if a particular EUN and casting date aligns with the build date of their car. |
