True, that is another dimension, but, I bet most of these cars running the faster times are close. I think a bare bones A-body is close in weight to a bare bones F-body (3,500 - 3,600 lbs). The 67-68 birds may be a bit lighter (maybe in the 3,400 lb range) while the SDs are probably a tad heavier. It seems that the RAII/RAIV cars, on top of running 12:1 compression, need to run 4.33s or lower to get those times while the HOs are close with 9.9:1 compression and 3.55s or 3.73s gears.

Thanks Dennis for posting this. It sure did perk up all these old men around here. I got a tell ya, these car are hammering from what I remember years ago. If my HO car even ran a 13 anything, I would be running around with my chest out. I can't imagine in the 12"s. I would love to go see this race. Thanks again for posting it. Eddie

I thought everyone might like to see some numbers from my very stock 1971 TA, auto, air, 3.08 rear. Obviously not the best equipped car for the 1/4 mile. I took it to the Pure Stock Drags in 2007 right after I bought it- it had 48k miles, was never apart, it even has the original exhaust.
Race 1 = 14.933, 2.355 60 foot 95.96 mph Race 2 = 14.341 2.159 60 foot, 97.13 mph Race 3 = 14.393 2.173 60 foot, 96.51 mph Nothing was done to the car to prep it, I just drove it there and raced. I had also never been down the 1/4, so I'm sure my driving skills left something to be desired. My impression is that most of the cars at the PSD have been optimized to some degree. I was paired with a 72 GSX with a 350. I doubt that car totally stock would have kept up. Here is a pic link: http://www.reocities.com/fjr340ps07/pair51.JPG |

Current best on my 71 GT-37, bone stock 8.1 cr, 455HO/Auto 3:08 is 13.37 3840 lbs with me in it.
3:73's will be in it for the spring, hoping for high 12's.

Very cool stuff, great to see more guys participating or wanting to.
Alot of free advertisement here for the PSD's, hope they appreciate that. I've always felt we don't hear enough about it and that it should also spread around the country a little more. For me it's much more enjoyable to watch than anything NHRA related. It reminds me of racing in the early 60's when we were all still fighting traction (even with stickies) and it was all still heads up racing. You are right 2manyT/A's, most all of them are as nice as anything you'd see at a show. Matter of fact, I thought there was some stipulation that cars must retain factory appearances with no add on aftermarket stickers in the windows or otherwise etc... |

Love to see an annual Pure Stock type event added in the St Louis or KC area.
Middle of the country & should draw well from MO, IL, MN, Plains states, TX, CO, Arkansas, etc. Any thoughts?

I agree, there are some nice tracks throughout that area. I'd even like to see it venture a little further West where the weather is more cooperative year round, since most tracks back East shut down after October and don't fire back up til April or May.

We will pull cars to P&G (to check cubic inches) that seem to run too quick and also check their compression ratio with a Whisler (accurtate to within 0.1) box. If the car doesn't pass either one, or both, they can still run for the event, but they have to make the changes to be legal for the next year, because we will check them again. When the event was catching on in popularity 12 years ago or so, we had cars that were blatently cheating (14:1 compression, stroker motors, light weight tranny internals, etc.) that we DQ'd them for teh next event. The F.A.S.T. race was born shortly thereafter. The vacumn minimum check is to keep camshafts from getting out of hand. We can't physically inspect each car for obvious time reasons, but we listen to them idle in neutral and in gear for automatics. We ask that new camshafts be as close to factory original as possible (2% of duration at 0.050" and advertised lift). We used to have a certified class that did a complete teardown and inspection the day before the event and may invite participants who want to prove their cars are legal to do this again if there is suficient interest. I think you should nail the 12's with that gear change, certainly with a little more compression. Dennis |

If you rebuilt your 455 HO to stock specs (as close as possible), you'd be surprised how quick your TA would run. Mid 13's @ 105 with 3.42 gears and hauling 4000 lbs is easy to do with careful attention to detail. I have to warn you...once you do race, you'll be hooked hard and want go faster and eventually build another car for the race, so you have to be careful, real careful. Dennis |

The T-37's are in the 3600 - 3700 lb. range, the 69-72 GTO's are in the 3800 - 4000 lb. range, the 1st gen Birds are in the 3400 - 3600 lb. range, and 2nd gen Birds are in the 3700 to 4000 lb. range depending on options, model, and driver girth. You are correct with the gears, the quickest of the engine types run: 455 HO/SD - 3.73 gears; RAIV - 4.33 gears; RAII - 4.10to 4.33 gears. Dennis |

Your bringing the GT-37 this year, right? It's been in enough magazines already, so it's time to beat on it like it was meant to. Dennis |
