Default 6 speed conversion?

Has anybody done a 6 speed manual swap on a 2nd gen Firebird? My GTO is pretty much done and we're wrapping up construction on a house, so it's about time for a new project and I'm jonesing for a TA.

Is there any major surgery required?

You don't mention whether or not you currently have a 4 speed or auto or what year your TA is or what 6 speed you intend to use. The trans tunnels are different and may require some surgery (installing a 4 spd hump) depending on which trans you intend to use.

I don't presently have a TA, but would like to buy one. If I do, I'd like to go w/ an LS and a manual overdrive trans. Ideally, I'd buy a car w/ a 4 speed or at least prepped for one. If I buy one, I really want a T-top car, so probably 76-81, but my desire is a 77-78. I have the skills to install a hump for the shifter if needed, but really don't want to get into major floor pan surgery (ie creating a custom trans tunnel).

I just installed a Kessler ss 700 5 spd in my 73 ta still under construction. I had to install a hump because it was born auto but no other cutting involved. Nice trans. Can't speak for 6 spd though sorry.

We've built two 73's with LSX engines, one recieved a production T56, the other a Magnum T56, and although close, neither required any floor massaging. The magnum has multiple shifter mounting points, and the handle went through the factory 4 speed hole. It also has a both an electrical and mechanical speedo output. The F-body T56 was modded with a Ford Cobra output shaft and housing which located the shifter farther forward, and also put it in the perfect location. It had to be modified to accept the mechanical cable. All future versions we build will get the Magnum. Link to 455" LSX/Magnum T56 is here:

I've done a few T56 swaps in 2nd gens behind Poncho motors. It is the most expensive, but it is the best.
