64 heater core seal
This is a picture of what the mpc calls heater core seal. 1st type. It is installed over the core tubes to the firewall engine side, as per 2nd ed resto guide, page 411. Also in the 1964 Tempest chassis manual section 12-6. A buddies 2 April cars have them, I,ve seen it on other 64,s also, when I wasn,t looking at something else. The question is, how many off you have this seal on your car? Lunch is riding on this. Thanks Tom.

My KC built April Car had that seal. Before the car was converted to a Heater Delete car by Scott Tiemann.

Tom Wood. Good post. At Dayton, last year, Steve ????, who has a '64 just like mine, asked if I had ever seen this seal on the firewall. I said NO. We went looking for the '64 he saw outside with the seal, but it was long gone. Never remember seeing one. Seems it would stick out. BUT makes sense. Anyone have a spare. Something else I'm looking for!!!!! "Bill"!

heater core seal
http://www.steelerubber.com/search?y...ket-70-2270-31 1963 full-size Pontiac used the same seal 9770746 MPB shows 1964 T/6-T-8 exc. A.C. SEAL heater core tubes-1st. type-w/part number molded on. 1964-1965 T/6-T/8 SEAL ,heater core tubes-2nd type 1964-sponge rubber(1-1/8thk.) sound like a change in mid year. So not every car that left the line in the model year had the molded seal

8LUG great info, buy steele stock this week. My buddy has 2 April built cars that have the seal. The 8000 mile 64 is a May car and does not have one.

Note that the original seal is at least 2 to 3"s thick. The ones that come in the repo seal kits is just a thin one. You can use the thin one at the firewall and the original, if it's still good to use, behind it so the heater core doesn't rattle.

If your talking about the thin sponge seal, that would be the second type that gets installed on the interior side of the firewall.

Tom and I recently discussed this by email, 1st & 2nd design '64 heater hose seals.
Anybody have a pic of the 2nd design seal? More importantly, anybody have an original '64 with the 2nd design seal? Kinda curious if we can pin down when the 2nd design seal may have entered '64 production. The 1st design molded rubber seal used externally is easy to identify, p/n 9770746 molded right on it as seen on the pix posted in this thread. GT182, the 2nd design seal is described by the MPC as "2nd type 1964-sponge rubber-(1 1/8 thk)". It was installed internally. The p/n is 9776917. This seal was carried over to subsequent model years also. Not sure what you are familiar with that would be 2-3" thick. Are we talking about the same part? It does not seem that the factory ever installed both the thick internal seal and the molded rubber external seal on the same '64 build, but your thought also occurred to me, not a bad idea but not quite factory correct. Tom and I also realized, you can throw this seal running change on the pile with the long list of '64 running changes that make the '64 "interesting" to figure out what is factory correct. Would be nice if a time frame for the change can be determined. |

John I'm thinking my car has both the inner and outer I stopped by today but can't really pull the hoses and outer seal to check to see because of where it is being stored on display at a private grouping . I'm sure I have to have the inner seal here somewhere on a heater unit I'll try to check tomorrow but it's down to single numbers here again and below -0- nights through the week sure getting tired of it .
