Default Alternator stamp

Was there a 2 letter code ink stamped on a 65 GTO? If so, what is the code for a 37 amp alternator?

My alternator is being restored by Ken Bruno right now and he is ready to finish the alternator. The only thing left to do is to put the stamp on it if it has one. He is not sure so he asked to me find out. Any help would be appreciated.

I agree with dld but your alternator number does not agree with that book nor could I find that number (1100704) in the 65 tempest chassis manual.

If I am reading the previous post correctly, there is not a definite answer on whether a 704 was used on a early 65 build. Eric Whites book says the 704 started in 66 with a XC stamp but my date code is Nov 64 which would only be for a 65 model year. Confused.

I have the same excact alternator as yours. I was thinking mine was a 704 for some reason. What 2 letter code are you having made?

My '65 GTO was built with a "TF" alternator (1100729), per the build sheet.

Car was built in September of 1964 in Pontiac, Michigan.

The original alternator is no longer on the car (has a replacement alternator).

I am cruising through my pictures of original unrestored cars and seeing some with, and some without, an ink stamp.

The '65 Cutlass A body Assembly Guide confirmed that the 1100704 among others were originally intended as Olds OE alts.

So they will exist with early '65 MY date codes.

I don't think it has ever been established how early the '65 Pontiac OE alts were superseded during the MY, or if perhaps they were used concurrently with the Olds equivalent p/n alts.

There is plenty of evidence to show that '65 Pontiacs & Tempests did get the Olds p/n alts as OE. Just isn't clear if there is a date or time frame for the transition.

Personally, I believe Pontiac initially installed the Pontiac p/n alts and transitioned to the Olds p/n alts at some point during the MY. But that is just an opinion.
