Default Carburetor base plate, shim plate, re-installing ???

I don’t remember how the carburetor base plate (or gasket) and shim plate were installed. As I recall, the gasket sets on top of the manifold, then the shim plate, then the carb. The PY magazine (catalog 12C, page 82) states the best install is two gaskets with the shim plate in between even though this is not stock.

Please advise.

On my 69 Gto I was told to ditch the shim plate and just use the gasket. On my 66 I just used the black gasket like the one shown in your pic underneath the shim plate. I have the Carter AFB carb on mine, don't know if that makes any difference or not. I'm sure someone will eventually chime in with the right answer. Not sure what's needed if using a Holley carb.

On my '67, with it's one-year-only exhaust passage on the intake under the carb, I did the sandwich install: gasket, plate, gasket. Works perfectly.

On my '67 OHC Sprint, the carb gasket had a cutout passage open to the heat riser below, the stainless plate installed on top of the gasket, the passage therefore heating the stainless plate and the entire carb base.

George-

Do you know if this plate was used on the 69 GTO with the base 400 engine and Rochester carb, or was it only used on the 67 GTO? I was told the 69 didn't use the plate. Not sure why it was on the car if that's the case. This was a one owner car and the plate looked as if it had been installed for a long time.
Thanks.

The metal shim was 67 only as was the channel running from the exhaust crossover, as well. I believe because the channel could get clogged over time was likely why it was discontinued. That and if the shim was forgotten the carb can be damaged.

If the intake is off of the car the two holes on the carb mating surface can be tapped and pipe plugs can be used to block the channel.

In any case, i noticed i would create vacuum leaks when i did R&R on the carb with that stainless plate. Always thought it was a dumb idea.

66 used the gasket only... as far as I know. It's all I'm using... no plate between 2 gaskets. Just the single gasket and no problems.
