Hi guys, I'm redoing the inside of the 64 lemans and I like the look of the 65 wood grain inserts. I was wondering will one of these fit my 64? Also which type do you guys use, I see some that are attached to a aluminum plate some not? OPGI has one with the heater control insert as well. Do I need the aluminum piece as well as the wood grain, I see prices from $50 to $150 any opinions?

The '64 and '65 dash unit is physically the same but maybe they have different part numbers. When I bought my '64 GTO in 1968 the previous owner apparently liked the woodgrain look and had already installed the '65 panel. I too loved the look and kept it on the car for many years. That panel was not adhered to any aluminum piece, as it was similar to Formica in feel and thickness (not flimsy) and simply stayed put on its own. Maybe someone on the Forum can talk about the reproduction pieces available today. My guess is the aluminum back-piece is a good idea as it will keep whatever face-panel straight.

It will certainly fit, and was a popular modification back in the day.
Here is a (famous) '64 with the woodgrain applique... K

Hi Guys, no recommendations on which one to buy? What about the one our host sells where they say "no need to buy an aluminum backer"?
Thanks |
