Flex fan and fan clutch
Can you put a fan clutch on an aftermarket flex-fan? I would like to cut down on some of the noise coming from the fan.

What you really need is a 7 blade flex fan. Are you running a 6 blade fan? If so, yes they are noisey. Flex a lite makes a 7 blade fan, I think the PN is 1818. It pulls a ton of air and is virtually silent. You can also go through the scrap yards if thats your thing and find a factory 7 blade flex fan. I actually prefer a clutch/fan set up, but my 7 blade flex fan out cools it.

i am wondering if I really even need a flex fan in the first place, it came on the car from the prev. owner. It never even gets to 180 degrees most of the time.
What fans from other cars will fit on a Pont. 400 engine? Many caprices, malibus, regals, etc. in the salvage yard near me |

I guess you could, but you would cancel out the engineering of the flex fan. If it's too loud, replace it with a factory 7 blade flex fan. I put a junkyard 7 blade 18" flex fan on my '67 GTO about 25 years ago, and it works great. It came off of a '69 Cadillac. No noise at all, and pulls a ton of air. The flex a lite 6 blade that used to be on my '65 sounded like a 1980's Mercedes or a Garbage truck....you couldn't hear the engine over the fan noise. A 19" clutch fan fixed that. Both cool just fine.

Or would this one work. Although it is a six blade.

One thing that makes a fan noisy is evenly spaced blades. You want irregular spaced blades. Thats why its noisy, like a airplane propeller. Those gaps in OEM fan blades are not there so you can get at the bolts, they are for noise reduction ; )

"Would a 1818 fan work in a 69 got or should it be 19"
When I installed the 1818 on the bird, it had more clearance at the shroud to fan tips. It may not be ideal, but it draws an incredible amount of air. If you have a 4 or 5 core, it is pretty much needed to get the air through the thick core. The web site for this fan actually states that these fans are for 4 or 5 core radiators. The six blade fan will be noisey period! Like a previous poster stated, the uneven blades are engineered to cancel the noise. My bird does not have any type of front spoiler to direct air into the grill are, and I believe this is why it was running hotter than normal with the clutch fan. It ran hot during low speed driving where the engine was spinning fast enough to disengage the fan and the forward speed of the car would not provide enough air through the grill.

I was looking at the local salvage yard yesterday at all the caprices/cadillac/monte carlos, etc. They all seemed to have the same fan except some had fan blades with curved edges and some had straight blades. Which one is the noisy/heavy duty fan?
All seemed to have unevenly spaced blades, but weren't the fans in the Caprices, etc. pretty noisy if I remember right? |

Non stock the holes are elongated / stock fans are exact hole pattern .

I installed the 1818 Flex fan and I noticed right away how much more air it moved in the engine compartment. Will see how it works in heavy traffic on the road. Way more air movement.

I have a 5 blade fan that has as you say " stock fans are exact hole pattern". The only writing I can see says "Koni". Not sure what to make of it.

Was referring to the spacer and some aftermarket fans . Stock fans & spacers are exact holes .
